About the position

Under the supervision of the Principal and the Executive Director - GEO Early College High School provides a planned instructional program in the subject specialty following the curriculum specified by standards set by Ivy Tech Community College Dual Credit partner. Provide learning experiences to encourage maximum student growth using appropriate materials. As part of a secondary teaching assignment, teaches one or more classes in the field of agriculture education to pupils in grades 7–12; assists in other departmental activities, including project supervision, summer duties, and school programs as assigned. Attends and participates in faculty meetings and other staff development to maintain professional competence. Attends and participates in professional development opportunities and training. Promotes a classroom environment that is conducive to student growth and responsibility.

Responsibilities

  • Develop lesson plans and instructional materials and provide individualized and/or group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of pupils with varying abilities, attitudes, and cultural backgrounds.
  • Provide instruction to students with special needs following IEP, use support services as appropriate, and participate in IEP meetings as appropriate.
  • Develop and teach skills and knowledge in one or more courses or grade levels, using courses of study provided by Dual Credit partner and Indiana Agriculture Standards.
  • Positively maintain proper control and discipline by establishing a good rapport between students and others involved in the learning processes and by district policy and procedure.
  • Evaluate pupil progress, keep appropriate records, prepare progress reports, and effectively communicate student progress with pupils, administrators, and parents.
  • Perform basic attendance accounting/reporting duties as directed by district policy.
  • Maintain professional competence through participation in professional growth activities provided by the State and Dual Credit partner, etc.
  • Develop and communicate curricular and instructional plans and objectives to students and parents including course descriptions, performance expectations, and other pertinent information.
  • Guide pupils in the selection of appropriate class projects.
  • Maintain surveillance over storage and use of school-owned materials, equipment, and tools to prevent loss or abuse.
  • Make minor adjustments and request repairs to tools and equipment as required.
  • Maintain contact with the agriculture community to keep in touch with job entry requirements.
  • Instruct pupils on the importance of accuracy, individual resourcefulness, and good work habits in obtaining and retaining jobs in the agriculture industry.
  • Participate in ordering shop materials, supplies, and parts as required, working under established budgets and procedures.
  • Provide related instruction with field, shop, laboratory cooperative work or other occupational experience that is appropriate to the vocational objective of the student.
  • Supervise pupils in out-of-classroom activities associated with the agriculture program.
  • Participate in curriculum and other developmental programs within the school of assignment and/or on a district level.
  • Work with local urban farming and organizations to develop specific agriculture education programs.
  • Work under modular or flexible scheduling plans.
  • Fulfill out-of-school and summer responsibilities as assigned.
  • Train teams for competitive agricultural events and attend FFA activities from the Local level to the Regional, and up to the National level.
  • Enforce the use of the curriculum provided by the Dual Credit partner.
  • Identify pupil needs, and cooperate with other professional staff members in assessing and helping pupils solve health, attitude, and learning problems.
  • Ensure that students are not left in the classroom at any time without teacher supervision.
  • Willingness to update skills and knowledge commensurate with the demands of this position.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Masters Degree or appropriate education is required for this position.
  • Knowledge of principles, theories, practices, methods, and techniques used in curriculum development and classroom instruction.
  • Knowledge of curriculum expectations for the subject being taught.
  • Knowledge of classroom procedures that promote appropriate student conduct and motivation for student learning.
  • Knowledge of National and state FFA Organization procedures.
  • Ability to adapt plans to meet different needs for learning.
  • Ability to create an instructional program and a class environment favorable to learning and personal growth.
  • Ability to maintain current information and expectations regarding grade level and curriculum being taught.
  • Ability to monitor children in classrooms.
  • Ability to display the use of good judgment in making decisions.
  • Ability to maintain professional relationships with pupils, parents, colleagues and supervising staff members.
  • Ability to operate a computer and use related software.
  • Ability to read, interpret, apply, and explain rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Ability to establish and maintain a variety of accurate record keeping and filing systems.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to communicate student progress with parents.
  • Ability to oversee the work of instructional aides.
  • Ability to establish effective rapport with pupils.
  • Ability to create a positive classroom environment.
  • Ability to maintain consistent, punctual and regular attendance.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective interpersonal relations using tact, patience and courtesy.
  • Active participation as an FFA Advisor.
  • Approved Dual Credit teaching credential for multiple agricultural courses in the Ivy Tech certificate and technical certificate pathways.
