About the position

The Associate Counsel will be responsible for providing legal and energy regulatory services to the Company, including representing the Company in matters before regulators (primarily the New York Public Service Commission) and providing advice and legal counsel to the Company's operating groups. Responsibilities

  • Provide legal and energy regulatory services to the Company.
  • Represent the Company in matters before regulators, primarily the New York Public Service Commission.
  • Render legal advice and assist in the representation of the Company in federal and state administrative proceedings, including rate cases, non-rate proceedings, rulemakings, and related judicial appeals.
  • Assist in the preparation of a variety of legal and regulatory filings including tariff, rate filings, and non-rate filings.
  • Assist in the preparation of briefs, comments, and other submissions in contested proceedings at federal and state regulatory agencies and in federal court.
  • Perform legal research and write legal memoranda.
  • Provide any other legal service related to Company operations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctorate from accredited Law School required.
  • Licensed to practice law. If not a member of the New York State Bar, must be an active member of the bar in good standing in any state, territory of the United States, the District of Columbia, or the commonwealth of Puerto Rico and have the ability to register as a New York in-house counsel.
  • Minimum of ten years of experience working on energy issues either working as a lawyer for a law firm, utility or energy company, state or federal regulatory utility commission, in a regulatory or legislative affairs position at a utility or energy company, or in the legislative branch of a state government or the federal government.
  • Ability to organize and coordinate projects effectively and efficiently.
  • Flexibility and ability to handle busy work environment.
  • Must excel at written and oral communication skills, negotiation skills, presentation skills and interpersonal skills, and must be able to adopt a customer service mentality.
  • Experience providing federal or state legal and regulatory services as part of a public utility, law firm, or regulatory agency.
  • Knowledge of federal or state electric or gas regulation, laws, and policies.
  • Experience in preparing comments and other submissions at federal or state regulatory agencies or before state or federal governments.
