About the position

The Assistant Vice President - Product & Underwriting will lead the operations and management of our Core and Middle Market segments to ensure continued achievement of profit and loss targets. This leadership role includes ownership and implementation of user-friendly product features, creating digitally-enabled underwriting workflows, managing the product's business mix portfolio, assessing the existing portfolio for profitability while determining new opportunities for class code expansion, launching marketing programs to strengthen branding, and translating the product segment's goals and end-user needs into a distribution strategy that prioritizes profitable growth. The Assistant Vice President - Product & Underwriting will also be responsible for assessing technology options for implementation as needed to ensure optimal segment productivity and industry-leading user experience. A key expectation of this role involves using data-driven customer sourcing and evaluation techniques to generate sustainable revenue and profit.

Responsibilities

  • Operate as an independent thought leader with accountability to PEI's Chief Underwriting Officer.
  • Lead a production underwriting team of 5-7 professional production underwriters.
  • Own product roadmap and lead all aspects of product strategy, development, production and management.
  • Manage product segment KPIs to ensure achievement of productivity, profit and growth targets.
  • Identify operational improvements to create efficient product delivery and best in class customer experience.
  • Analyze new tech/digital tools to optimize the in-depth analysis of new business, renewals, declinations and appetite.
  • Create, test and implement models to enhance risk analysis.
  • Conduct analytical research to identify new business and renewal opportunities.
  • Work closely with product stakeholders including, Underwriting, Marketing, Sales and Actuarial on strategy, regulatory changes, compliance, customer service, workflow and implementation schedules.
  • Other duties and special projects as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Minimum 10 years as a product manager, production underwriter, or underwriting director.
  • 5+ years of experience in workers compensation insurance.
  • Ability to work cross-functionally with technical, underwriting, marketing, sales and senior leaders.
  • High-competency analytical skills using Excel, PowerBI and other data evaluation tools are required.
  • Strong time management skill required for organizing, prioritizing and managing multiple projects.
  • Experience communicating product design, Management and go-to-market strategies and plans.
  • Familiar with researching, learning and vetting new technology solutions.
  • Effective written and oral communications skills.
  • Data-driven and detail-oriented.
  • Strategic thinker with a passion for getting things done.
  • Self-starter, innovator and curious by nature.

Nice-to-haves

  • Project Management Certifications such as CAPM (Certified Associate in Project Management), PMP (Project Management Professional) a plus.
  • Industry designations such as CPCU, CIC, ARM, AU, WCIRB Essentials or similar designations a plus.
