About the position

MaineHealth Maine Medical Center's Department of Cardiac Surgery is seeking a congenital cardiac surgeon to join their Division of Congenital Cardiac Surgery in Portland, Maine. The congenital heart surgery program at Maine Medical Center is over 50 years old and is the only congenital cardiac surgery program in Northern New England. The MaineHealth Congenital Heart Center is a well-established program offering the full range of services in congenital cardiology, including comprehensive catheter-based interventions, electrophysiology and adult congenital cardiology. The surgical program is supported by pediatric cardiac anesthesia, perfusion, intensive care physicians and nursing services. The surgeon will work with the Director of Congenital Cardiac Surgery to continue to expand the Congenital Cardiac Surgery Division. In addition to pediatric and adult congenital cardiac surgery, the division also supports the pediatric ECMO and pediatric airway surgical programs. The candidate will also have an opportunity to work closely with the seven members of the Adult Cardiac Surgery program with specialized Centers of Excellence in Mitral Valve Repair, Aortic Surgery, and Mechanical Circulatory Support. Congenital cardiology and pediatric cardiac surgery services are offered at The Barbara Bush Children's Hospital, a 96-bed hospital within Maine Medical Center and a three-time Magnet designated hospital. The PICU has 8 beds with 400+ admissions per year, and the CTICU has 12 beds for patients over 18 years of age. The Malone Family Tower provides state-of-the-art cardiovascular facilities, including cardiac surgery operating suites, hybrid ORs and interventional catheterization suites.

Responsibilities

  • Work with the Director of Congenital Cardiac Surgery to expand the Congenital Cardiac Surgery Division.
  • Perform pediatric and adult congenital cardiac surgeries.
  • Support pediatric ECMO and pediatric airway surgical programs.
  • Teach and mentor residents and medical students from the Maine Medical Center-Tufts University School of Medicine Program.
  • Collaborate with the Adult Cardiac Surgery program.

Requirements

  • Board Certified by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery.
  • Completion of United States Fellowship/specialty training in congenital cardiac surgery.
  • ABTS certification in Congenital Cardiac Surgery is preferred.
  • At least five years of experience is required.
  • Experienced in neonatal and adult congenital cardiac surgery.
