About the position

The Cultural Preservation Manager is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Cultural/Historical Preservation Department, which includes, but is not limited to, managing the budget, reviewing incoming correspondence, and preparing outgoing correspondence on behalf of the Department and promoting and preserving the tribal language and cultural resources. Responsible for the management of the Tribe’s historical archives. Responsible for the compilation of historical information that will eventually be transferred to a museum setting.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the development of yearly department goals/objectives and budgets.
  • Responsible for planning, organizing, and scheduling cultural preservation activities throughout the year for Tribal members, such as language classes, etc.
  • Responsible for developing educational resources by utilizing tribal member knowledge.
  • Responsible for gathering, cataloguing historical archives in all areas affecting the Tribe.
  • Responsible for preserving tribal lands.
  • Responsible for the safe and secure storage of items collected.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • A college degree in History, Archeology, or a related field is preferred.
  • Knowledge of Tribal History is a must.
  • Must learn about the Section 106 and NAGPRA Process and the federal laws involved.
  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills, including public speaking and grant writing.
  • Organizational and record-keeping skills are necessary for accurate logging of correspondence and follow-up promptly as required by law.
  • Proficiency with computers and programs such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and the Internet.
  • Valid Driver’s License and Insurance.
