About the position

Selective Insurance is looking for a Director, Software Engineering responsible for delivering software solutions and information systems to solve Commercial Lines business and customer needs. This individual will oversee a team consisting of senior software engineers and team leads responsible for supporting applications that are complex in nature and of high strategic importance to the corporation. The primary responsibility of this team is to ensure solutions are aligned to business strategies, and to provide technical input and implementation support to application delivery teams for new projects and enhancements.

Responsibilities

  • Manages a portfolio of business application projects for Commercial business.
  • Meet with managers (IT and business) to discuss system requirements, specifications, costs and timelines.
  • Establishing and maintaining relationships with business and IT counterparts to ensure proper collaboration.
  • Accountable for project scope, schedule, and budget ensuring commitments and progress are monitored closely and communicated clearly.
  • Forecasting and allocation of team members across several development projects.
  • Regular reporting of key metrics like resource allocation, software defects, productivity, and efficiency.
  • Trains, supervises, assigns projects to, evaluates, and is responsible for hiring/termination of information technology personnel and contracting staff to design, engineer, and implement systems software.
  • Talent management of team members to ensure high morale and appropriate advancement of individual goals and career aspirations.
  • Participate in the evaluation, acquisition, and implementation of vendor software to support business processes.
  • Troubleshoot technology issues.
  • Participation in and well-planned implementation of established quality improvement initiatives and processes.
  • In conjunction with the architecture group, establish and enforce design and coding standards.
  • Evaluate and recommend application development tools.

Requirements

  • College degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems, Business, or related field preferred.
  • Prior management/supervisory experience with information technology personnel and offshore/onsite consults preferred.
  • Prior hands-on application development experience using web based technologies and languages is preferred.
  • Solid knowledge of surrounding technologies including design patterns and modern standards.
  • Great leadership skills to work effectively with peers within and across organizations.
  • Solid written and interpersonal communication with the ability to deliver compelling presentations.
  • Strong ability to manage and execute on multiple project timelines and manage competing priorities.
  • Experience in Property Casualty insurance a plus.
