About the position

The Marketing and Communications Manager leads bold, strategic marketing and communications efforts to elevate Planned Parenthood Northern California's (PPNorCal) brand, engage the public, and support organizational priorities, including patient recruitment. This newly created role strengthens the organization's voice in a rapidly evolving landscape, and oversees internal and external communications, media relations, brand integrity, and mission aligned marketing campaigns. The Communications Manager collaborates across departments, including the CEO, development and health center teams to ensure clear, consistent, messaging across fundraising, donor engagement, patient outreach, and digital platforms.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as lead media strategist and storyteller, driving high-impact, proactive, and responsive outreach that enhances PPNorCal's public image and amplifies its voice.
  • Build and maintain trusted relationships with key local, regional, and state media to advance awareness of PPNorCal's mission and impact.
  • Represent the organization as a media spokesperson (TV, radio, print) as needed. Develop story concepts, pitch reporters, conduct research, write press materials, coordinate media events, and track outcomes.
  • Plan and execute creative, audience-centered integrated marketing campaigns that support patient recruitment, health services, and organizational initiatives.
  • Oversee design and production of communications collateral-including newsletters, brochures, reports, and digital content-ensuring clarity, emotional resonance, and align with PPNorCal's mission and brand.
  • Lead a data-driven, equity-centered email and digital outreach strategy to grow and engage diverse audiences and support fundraising goals.
  • Drive branding, website, and digital media strategy, in collaboration with relevant departments, to elevate PPNorCal's digital presence and ensure accessibility for all communities served.
  • Draft and edit a range of public facing content, including speeches, press releases, op-eds, media advisories, and talking points, in English and Spanish (if bilingual).
  • Lead message development and media training for staff, Board members, and volunteer leaders to promote confident, values-based storytelling.
  • Collaborate across departments to ensure internal and external communications are cohesive, consistent, and aligned with PPNorCal's mission.
  • Develop and manage the Communications Department budget, prioritizing strategic investments in tools, partnerships, and content.
  • Represent PPNorCal at select external meetings, conferences, and events to enhance visibility and elevate thought leadership.
  • Partner with Clinical Operations and the Development teams to build and activate supporter storytelling networks and speaker bureaus.
  • Lead crisis communications and issues management, coordinating timely, strategic messaging across teams to safeguard the organization's reputation and public trust.
  • Support the integration of digital communications across web, social media, email, and earned media platforms.
  • Maintain active collaboration with Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) and Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California (PPAC) to ensure alignment on branding and advocacy messaging.
  • Ensure all organizational spokespeople are well-prepared and appropriately briefed for media appearances and public engagement.
  • Report to the Vice President of Government Relations & Communications, ensuring alignment with organizational priorities and strategic communication goals.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
  • Five years of managerial experience, preferably directing marketing or media relations programs in a health care services or nonprofit organization environment.
  • A minimum of 2-3 years of experience writing/editing for publication is preferred.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents.
  • Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format.
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, and Power Point) and experience with social media platforms (LinkedIn, Meta, TikTok) are required.
  • Bilingual written and speaking proficiency in Spanish and English strongly preferred.
