About the position

As the Mechanical Engineer, Research and Development (R&D), you will be responsible for performing implant and instrument design work, leading small projects, and actively participating on multi-functional teams to advance assigned projects through the design/development process through launch to the market for Stryker's Sustainability Solutions Business Unit. You will need to live within commuting distance to our Tempe, Arizona office. You will need to be in the office 3-4 days a week and can work from home on other days.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, modify, and verify mechanical components for medical devices under supervision.
  • Work with R&D, Quality, Manufacturing, Regulatory, Clinical, Marketing, and Project Management to ensure project success.
  • Conduct research and studies to support product design, assist with prototyping and bench testing.
  • Support problem solving, root cause analysis, identify potential solutions, and evaluate them against requirements.
  • Understand the product's intended use and clinical procedures.
  • Interpret customer needs and understand design inputs.
  • Understand fundamental industry standards, design requirements, and test strategies which align with regulatory requirements.
  • Create or refine engineering documentation, such as the Design History file per company design control procedures.
  • Learn R&D procedures like design controls and risk management, per the Quality Management System.
  • Work on problems in limited scope; purposefully learning while gaining experience, demonstrating ownership, building relationships, and integrity of work.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, BioMedical, or related discipline.
  • 0+ years of work experience.
  • Fundamental knowledge and understanding of mechanical or medical device engineering practices and tools, design principles.

Nice-to-haves

  • Internship experience in R&D medical device development.
  • Basic knowledge of design and concept generation CAD or CAE modeling tools (ProE, Creo or SolidWorks preferred).
  • Basic knowledge of analysis tools, statistical methods, and mechanical device testing.
  • Technical ability to create, read, and interpret engineering drawings and models, applying GD&T and CAE tools.
