Amazon Web Services is hiring a Product Design Mechanical Engineer for our Electrical Products and Services Engineering team. The product engineering team is a part of a global engineering team, responsible for the design and continuous innovation for products used within our rapidly expanding data center footprint. The Product engineering team at Amazon works to design and develop resilient, cost-effective electrical distribution products and systems. As an engineer at Amazon, we are responsible for achieving world class uptime for our customers. We drive continuous advancements and improvements with our designs, and communicate technical direction to Senior Management. We seek new ways to enhance the reliability, scalability, and cost effectiveness of our engineering designs. Responsibilities

  • Work with internal partner teams to solicit customer input and define design requirements for product design.
  • Lead new product design, development and qualification of critical electrical power distribution equipment for AWS datacenters including LV and MV switchgear, power distribution cabinets and panels.
  • Work with global suppliers and manufacturers to specify appropriate electrical equipment and components, ensuring tier 2-3 supply chain resiliency.
  • Ensure compliance with UL, CSA, IEC and federal, state and municipal requirements and building codes across different countries through appropriate levels of testing.
  • Validate design through prototype, pre-production and first-of-kind builds, conducting DFx and value engineering analysis through each step and updating design and documentation.
  • Work with field engineering and commissioning teams to properly test and validate installation, operation, and performance of electrical products.
  • Provide support for manufacturing activities for the new products on concurrent projects in multiple geographical locations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering.
  • 8+ years leading new product design, development, product certification and manufacturing support of electrical products.
  • Demonstrated track record of design documentation creation including 3D models, submittals, assembly and part drawings.
  • Experience validating design through prototype builds, pre-production builds and first-of-kind builds, conducting DFx and value engineering analysis through each step and updating design documentation.

Nice-to-haves

  • Able to interpret electric code NEC, NFPA, UL891, UL508, UL1066, UL1558, ANSI C37.
  • Design experience of Low Voltage (LV) distribution products with focus on switchgear, switchboards and panelboards.
  • Familiarity of product validation process and experience performing product certification testing by third party labs.
  • Knowledge of typical data center designs/architectures, and be following industry design trends.
  • Ability to carry new design concepts through exploration, development, and into prototyping/manufacturing.
  • The ability to perform complex business case analysis to justify technical decisions and present the justification to management in a high-level review.
