About the position

Medical Laboratory Supervisor manages staff and is responsible for oversight of the laboratory department. The role involves formulating short and long-range goals for the clinical laboratory unit, managing operational policies, preparing activity reports, developing laboratory programs, maintaining inventory, ensuring compliance with standards, and providing patient care. The supervisor is also responsible for personnel management, including recruitment, performance appraisals, and training. The position requires communication with patients and other medical personnel, participation in specimen collection, and documentation of laboratory testing results.

Responsibilities

  • Formulate short and long-range goals for the clinical laboratory unit.
  • Manage operational policies and procedures of the clinical laboratory department.
  • Prepare weekly and monthly activity reports reflecting volume of work and output results.
  • Develop and monitor laboratory programs including quality control procedures.
  • Maintain sufficient inventory of material supplies and equipment.
  • Demonstrate proficiency with hospital practices and standards.
  • Maintain confidentiality of patient information.
  • Provide patient care that promotes safety and well-being.
  • Support hospital philosophy, objectives, and goals.
  • Develop and monitor recruitment and selection for newly hired employees.
  • Participate in specimen collection and ensure proper identification and labeling.
  • Coordinate and participate in performance and interpretation of complex technical duties.
  • Complete required organizational compliance education.

Requirements

  • Must possess current skills in Blood Bank, Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology, and Urinalysis.
  • Ability to demonstrate dexterity and attention to detail.
  • Ability to train, orient, and evaluate job performance of personnel.
  • Knowledge of COLA, CLIA, and CLIP Laboratory Accreditation requirements.
  • Experience involving patient contact and strong communication skills.
  • Must possess visual acuity required to distinguish fine gradations of color.
  • Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, or medical laboratory science.
  • Current certification with a nationally recognized registry such as MT(ASCP).
