About the position

UPMC West Shore is looking for a Patient Care Technician - Specialist for their Emergency Department! This is a Part Time (32 hours per week), Evening/Night Shift Position (11a-11p, 3p-3a, 7p-7a). The Patient Care Technician - Specialist (PCT-Sp) provides routine patient care and supports the department services in accordance with established policies and procedures, and as may be directed by the nurse or physician to assure that the highest degree of quality patient care can be maintained at all times. The PCT-Sp performs a variety of patient care duties including assisting with patient procedures and Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) such as bathing, feeding, transporting, toileting, ambulating, turning and repositioning patients. In addition, the PCT-Sp is responsible for completing medical record documentation in accordance with established procedures & ensuring equipment malfunctions are reported to the appropriate departments. This role contributes to the universal unit activities such as responding to call lights, telephones, passing meal trays, and adhering to all safety policies/procedures relative to patient care and hospital related information. Establishing professional relationships and utilizing effective communication with patients, their families, colleagues, and other departments is vital for this role. The PCT-Sp also provides feedback to the RN regarding patient care, reports changes in patient status, and provides instruction to patients and their families under the direction of the RN.

Responsibilities

  • Performs assigned work in a timely and productive manner.
  • Completes department clerical functions as needed.
  • Must routinely perform the UPMC nursing core patient care technician responsibilities including ADLs (bathing, feeding, transporting, toileting, ambulating, turning and repositioning patients).
  • Completes point of care testing (inc. blood glucose), weights, vital signs, I&O, telemetry monitor application/reapplication, HAC & PSI prevention (TEDs/SCDs).
  • Completes simple dressings, placement and removal of restraints, bladder scan, all specimen collections.
  • Performs IV catheter removal, Foley catheter removal, IV insertion, Foley catheter insertion, straight catheterization, phlebotomy/venipuncture and ticket to ride.
  • Assists with physical, respiratory, and cardiopulmonary therapies.
  • Provides feedback to the RN regarding patient care and reports changes in patient status.
  • Provides instruction to patients and their families under the direction of the RN.
  • May apply monitor and remove patient restraints as per physician or hospital protocol.
  • Strictly adheres to all policies and procedures relative to patient care and hospital related information.
  • Complies with safety policies and procedures including standard precautions.
  • Suggests and supports changes within the department.
  • Assumes responsibility for assignment and views problems as challenges.
  • Demonstrates awareness of behavior on the efficient functioning of the department.
  • Supports department-based projects and quality initiatives.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Must have either 2-years of general healthcare experience with phlebotomy/venipuncture OR 1 year of experience AND enrollment in PT/OT/PA/RN program or related healthcare training program with completion of at least one clinical rotation OR 1 year of experience AND completion of a bachelor's degree in a health sciences field.
  • Annual completion of a professional contribution to be determined after hire.
  • Successful completion of patient care technician specialist class.
  • Successful completion of basic information system training.
  • Microcomputer experience preferred.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.

Nice-to-haves

  • Nursing Student that has completed one clinical rotation preferred.
  • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Paramedic or currently enrolled in an EMT or Paramedic program preferred.
