About the position

As a Principal Software Engineer, you will serve as a technical leader within the Safety System Software team in Global Instrumentation and Control. You will drive the development of advanced software applications for Nuclear Safety Instrumentation and Control systems using the Westinghouse Common Q Platform. This role requires deep technical expertise, strategic thinking, and the ability to mentor and guide engineering teams.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design, development, and maintenance of application software for I&C Safety System products.
  • Define and review software architecture and design strategies aligned with regulatory and safety requirements.
  • Provide technical leadership across cross-functional teams, including engineering, testing, and manufacturing.
  • Collaborate with external stakeholders to support testing, certification, and deployment of safety-critical software.
  • Troubleshoot complex software issues and guide resolution strategies.
  • Champion best practices in software development, documentation, and configuration management.
  • Mentor and coach senior and junior engineers to build technical capabilities within the team.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of experience in software development, preferably in highly regulated industries (e.g., nuclear, aerospace, medical).
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • Proven experience with PLC programming, RTOS (e.g., VxWorks, Green Hills), and distributed I&C architectures.
  • Proficiency in C/C++, SQL/Access, Git/Subversion or similar SCM tools, Azure DevOps or similar CI/CD platforms, IBM DOORS or similar requirements management tools.
  • Strong understanding of the software development lifecycle, particularly the waterfall model.
  • Excellent problem-solving, communication, and leadership skills.
