Product Development Engineer - Roofing Underlaymen

PURPOSE OF THE JOB
The Product Development Engineer manages the development, implementation and support of new technologies related to roofing underlayment products. Owens Corning currently sells synthetic and self-adhered asphaltic underlayments. This role will translate customer, manufacturing & application needs into effective product designs and specifications. Candidate will lead product development projects to successfully deliver customer-inspired solutions for our Roofing Components business. The Product Development Engineer will work very closely with Product Management, Manufacturing, Science and Technology, Sourcing, Capital Engineering, Intellectual Property, Product Stewardship, and Marketing organizations to deliver cross-functional product development opportunities.
This role will have three specific accountabilities:
To creatively utilize human centered design methodology to engage customers, end-users, sales and marketing to identify product features that customers value.
To partner with cross functional resources to develop and launch products that meet customer needs.To serve as project and technical lead for stage-gate product development projects.
To engage and partner with Roofing and Asphalt plants and/or 3rd party vendors to create quality specifications and execute product manufacturing.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Demonstrates a commitment to safety (100%)

Implements a personal safety action plan and review with leader.
3.
Leads and participates in regular safety meetings and ensures rigorous compliance to standard safety procedures and OC corporate policies.

Completes safety action plan; co-leads on regular safety initiatives.

Identifies and eliminates work-place hazards.

Translate customer needs into product designs (60%)
2.
Employ human centered design methodology to identify product features that customers value
3.
Translate ethnographic insights into product prototypes and rapidly iterate with customers to evaluate concepts and deliver customer-validated product designs
4.
Develop and execute testing and validation of product performance
5.
Create and qualify product and test mimics as needed to validate performance
6.
Employ lean and six sigma methodologies to drive efficient data-based decisions
7.
Partner with plants and vendors to develop quality standards and specifications and execute manufacturing
8.
Actively collect and analyze competitive product trends and utilize to drive product line enhancements and developments
9.
Execute project leadership on programs (30%)
10.
Lead stage-gated product development projects from concept to commercialization
11.
Define, manage, and communicate the scope, timeline, and resources needed to execute the project
12.
Identify, assess, and mitigate project risks utilizing FMEA methodology
13.
Engage large cross-functional teams to ensure consistent alignment with the business strategy throughout the project and to ensure delivery of project objectives
14.
Collaborate and communicate effectively with people at all levels within the organization
15.
Provide technical support (10%)
16.
Provide technical support to manufacturing to enhance or evaluate existing products
17.
Provide technical support to the business to evaluate new market opportunities
18.
Provide product training to sales and marketing to communicate product benefits, application methods and answer questions.
19.
Proliferate awareness and utilization of human centered design methodology
20.
Initiate and drive external relationships to build knowledge and product leadership
JOB REQUIREMENTS
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
MS or PhD in Scientific or Engineering Degree.
A minimum of 5 to 8 years of experience in a research and development environment is required.
EXPERIENCE:
Technical knowledge and experience with roofing products, formulations, processes, applications, and customers.
Technical knowledge and experience with polymer modified asphalt formulations.
Six Sigma Certification and PMP Certification are preferred.
Demonstrated effective project and technical leadership in R&D and manufacturing environments.
Demonstrated ability to develop and meet key milestones, to work and communicate effectively with people at all levels within the organization, and to contribute technical solutions.
Demonstrated ability to generate new Intellectual Property.
Experience with ASTM, ICC, ARMA and other roofing manufacturing trade associations, testing agencies and code bodies is preferred.
Experience with ethnography and human centered design methodology and tools are preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
Proficiency in obtaining and translating customer insights into valuable product designs.
Proficiency in leading projects within stage-gate product development processes.
Proficiency in the appropriate definition and solution of complex technical problems.
Proficiency in lean data collection and using statistics to drive efficient data-based decisions.
