About the position

The Advance Technology organization within Collins Aerospace has an opportunity for a Software Engineer to develop autonomy algorithms supporting Future Flight Autonomy projects. With Future Flight Autonomy, we focus on the automation and autonomous solutions needed to enable next generation aircraft capabilities and meet customer needs. You will take abstract concepts from new ideas to implemented practical solutions and collaborate across multiple domains supporting Simplified Vehicle Operation (SVO) and Single Pilot Operation (SPO) capable avionics. We define, prototype, validate and transition autonomous capabilities to program or product teams and identify technologies for further technology investment. You will be a part of the team taking capabilities from concepts and high-level requirements to simulation and prototypes, integrated Lab solutions, and real-world test activities on experimental aircraft. You will be an integral part of a distributed team composed of professionals from several disciplines and must have the ability to operate well independently and as a part of a team. You should have strong interpersonal skills to collaborate across the organization and achieve goals.

Responsibilities

  • Lead SW algorithm development and simulation activities to mature capabilities for integration in various labs environments and test Aircraft.
  • Define Concept of Operations and High-Level Requirements for advanced capabilities.
  • Decompose capabilities to define necessary SW components.
  • Integrate SW solutions and create functional prototypes.
  • Engage with external domains to develop maturation and integration plans for advanced capabilities into existing platforms.
  • Prepare and give demonstrations of new capabilities.
  • Engage in Non-Advocate and Peer Review activities.
  • Identifying the necessary activities and components for successful development.
  • Communicate a plan, next steps, unknowns, dependencies, PoCs, status, etc.

Requirements

  • Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and minimum 10 years prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 7 years of experience.
  • U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are authorized to access information under this program/contract.
  • Experience with algorithm and simulation development.
  • Experience with Avionics Systems.
  • Experience with Software Integration in lab and/or aircraft environments.
  • Experience with concepts such as CONOPS, trade-studies, Minimum Viable Product, and prototype development.
  • Development life-cycle experience from Requirements to Design and Test.
  • Experience leading successful execution programs and cadencing development activities.

  • Demonstrated ability to rapidly build breadth into new technology areas.
  • Demonstrated ability to take ownership of tasks and lead technical efforts spanning multiple stakeholders.
  • Ability to clearly define needs, plans, and status for complex efforts.
  • Experience finding solutions to new problems where no 'right answer' exists.
  • Ability to go from concept to prototype quickly and understand the maturity needed.
  • Ability to be comfortable recommending a path forward and taking feedback on that recommendation.
  • Experience with SW certification requirements.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams to achieve operational goals.
  • Detail-oriented and capable of managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience using analytical and problem-solving skills to effectively identify and resolve issues and mitigate risks.
  • Proven ability to facilitate difficult conversations and communicate early, and concisely with individuals at all organizational levels.
