About the position

Disney Entertainment & ESPN Technology is focused on creating magical viewing experiences and transforming the media business for the future. The organization is involved in evolving streaming and digital products, powering advertising and distribution, and delivering unmatched entertainment and sports content. The Media Engineering team aims to provide the best video playback experience and streamline technology across various channels. The Quality, Targeting, and Experience team develops automated feedback loops for video delivery across Disney's streaming services, ensuring high-quality experiences for consumers.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with a team of data engineers, software engineers, researchers, data scientists, and product managers.
  • Provide leadership by example to other developers.
  • Design and deliver backend architectures in a production environment.
  • Build RESTful services.
  • Develop robust data pipelines for quality experience reporting.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience designing and delivering backend architectures in a production environment.
  • Experience building RESTful services.
  • Proficient in at least one programming language: Scala, Java, Go, or Python.
  • Familiar with AWS, CI/CD pipelines, and Kubernetes.
  • Self-motivated, independent, and excellent at problem-solving.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to mentor less experienced developers.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Software Engineering, Electrical or Electronics Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent work experience.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience designing and operating large-scale, high-availability backend services and JVM-based applications.
  • Knowledge of functional programming patterns.
  • Experience with observability tools for metrics, logging, and monitoring (e.g., Datadog, Splunk, Grafana).
  • Hands-on experience with messaging technologies (e.g., Kafka, Kinesis, SQS).
  • Experience with stream processing frameworks like Flink or Spark.
  • Familiarity with CDN technologies.
  • Interest in video streaming and internet networking.
