About the position

TE Connectivity's medical business unit is a leader in engineering design and manufacturing within the medical device industry. Specializing in critical components such as metal shafts, needles, polymer extrusions, as well as cable and interventional device assemblies, we offer end-to-end solutions-from rapid prototyping to high-volume manufacturing. We are committed to delivering cutting-edge technologies that improve patient outcomes and advance healthcare innovation. As a Staff R&D/Product Development Engineer in our Advanced Technology team, you will play a key role in advancing polymer innovations both as individual components and integral parts of medical device assemblies. You'll focus on researching, identifying, and implementing emerging technology and market trends, while contributing to the strategic technology roadmap for polymer-based products. You'll collaborate with global cross-functional teams and subject matter experts to drive product development forward. This role is based at our Plymouth, MN facility, and you'll be working alongside team members in Oregon, Ireland and India.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the team's subject matter expert on polymer materials development including new compounds for enhanced performance and regulatory compliance.
  • Interface directly with development engineers, customers, product managers, sales, manufacturing engineering, and other cross-functional team members to ensure successful project delivery.
  • Use simulation tools, 3D CAD, and material testing methods to design and analyze polymer components.
  • Develop and maintain engineering documentation, including design specifications, validation test plans, qualification reports, and project timelines.
  • Act as a technical leader, mentoring and coaching junior engineers.
  • Stay informed on industry trends and customer needs and convert this knowledge into actionable recommendations for the product development roadmap.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 8 years of relevant work experience, or equivalent practical experience, with a preference for experience in medical device development.
  • In-depth knowledge of polymer materials science, including extrusion, molding, and heat shrink tubing fabrication or a willingness to learn and develop expertise in these areas.
  • Proficiency in design and analysis tools such as simulation software and 3D CAD.
  • Proven experience in technical leadership of cross-functional projects.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to effectively interact with internal teams, customers, and external partners.
  • Drive collaboration with teams across multiple geographies. Comfortable working in different time zones, and fluent in English (verbal and written).
  • Highly motivated, quick to learn, and able to work independently while contributing to team success.

Nice-to-haves

  • Familiarity with catheter-based medical device design and function.
  • Knowledge of medical device regulatory requirements.
  • Certification or experience with Design for Six Sigma or similar methodologies.

Benefits

  • A comprehensive benefits package including health insurance, 401(k), disability, life insurance, employee stock purchase plan, paid time off and voluntary benefits.
