About the position

GAP is the longest established gastroenterology practice in the Piedmont Triad area. This independent, physician-owned GI practice is looking for Triage Nurses for our GI Clinics. GAP evaluates new patients, performs consultations and conducts follow-up visits for chronic gastrointestinal conditions. Our offices draw and assess labs, administer injections and monitor medication therapies. We offer on-site infusion services and our clinical staff assist with a variety of in-office procedures. When appropriate, GAP schedules appointments for outpatient screening, diagnostic and/or treatment procedures. Our endoscopy centers are physician-owned outpatient ambulatory surgical centers which specialize in colon cancer screening and prevention as well as a number of other procedures including endoscopy.

Responsibilities

  • Provide triage telephone service to ensure prompt identification of patients with high-risk conditions.
  • Sort, prioritize, and assess patients to evaluate their symptoms.
  • Document the patient’s chief complaints in the electronic medical record.
  • Relay patient advice and order specific tests based on standard orders.
  • Schedule appointments based on urgency level.
  • Perform short evaluations of the patient situation to estimate severity of illness and/or injury.
  • Determine urgency of seeing the patient based on brief assessment and familiarity with a patient’s condition and medical history.
  • Set up appointments for patients who do not need to go to ER but need to see a physician.
  • Handle routine information requests from patients.

Requirements

  • NC licensed RN or LPN.
  • Minimum three years of experience as RN or LPN.
  • One to two years of telephone triage experience in a medical practice setting preferred.
  • Strong computer skills and experience with electronic health record required.
  • Knowledge of telephone-based clinical assessment techniques.
  • Knowledge of medical practice telephone triage protocols.
  • Skill in using electronic medical records to check patient history.
  • Skill in using computerized medical information database during evaluation.
  • Skill in making triage decisions and responding quickly and calmly in emergency situations.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and calmly with patients.
  • Ability to elicit information needed to make brief evaluations.
  • Ability to work closely with physicians and other clinicians as needed.

Nice-to-haves

  • Epic experience preferred.
  • Bilingual skills a plus.
