2026 Summer Intern - Protein Sciences Laboratory Automation Department Summary The Department of Protein Sciences at Genentech is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Laboratory Automation Intern to join the BMR Automation team for Summer 2026. This full-time, on-site internship in South San Francisco offers hands-on experience executing, optimizing, and validating automated protein purification workflows in a collaborative research environment. The intern will complete a focused, project-based assignment supporting an internally developed automated protein expression and purification workflow for intracellular and membrane proteins, working closely with automation engineers and protein scientists to evaluate performance and support workflow readiness for routine deployment. This internship position is located in South San Francisco, on-site. The Opportunity Execute and evaluate automated protein expression and purification workflows using established liquid-handling systems. Support automation-enabled sample preparation and method execution, including lysis, clarification, and re-array. Assist with programming, running, and troubleshooting automated methods and associated instrumentation. Collect and analyze run data to assess automation performance and identify sources of variability. Document automated methods and findings, and prepare a final technical presentation summarizing performance and recommendations. Program Highlights Intensive 12-weeks, full-time (40 hours per week) paid internship. Program start dates are in May/June 2026. A stipend, based on location, will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship. Ownership of challenging and impactful business-critical projects.
