About The Position

The 3-D/Ceramics Studio Technician is responsible for maintaining equipment, providing materials, and technical support to the studio-related programs in Ceramics and 3-D studio classes. Assists in supporting the education purpose of the 3D and Ceramics classes. Keep the studio and kiln yard clean, safe, and orderly for the instructors and students. The 3-D/Ceramics Studio Technician is a part-time, 19 hours-or-less per week appointment that works on a schedule established by the Arts, Media, and Social Sciences Faculty Chair. The Studio Technician must be able to work independently.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Ceramics or Sculpture or equivalent work experience in the field.
  • Experience and/or higher education coursework in fine art.
  • Experience in the ceramic process (firing, forming, etc.).
  • Knowledge of mixing various clay bodies, low fire, and stoneware glazes.
  • Understands all bisque and glaze firing processes.
  • Fire electric and gas kilns.
  • Use a variety of ceramic tools and equipment such as: clay mixer, Electric and kick potter’s wheels, slab roller.
  • Lift heavy weights of 50-100lbs alone or with assistance.
  • Verbal and mathematical abilities sufficient to mix clay and glazes, read clay and glaze recipes, and to perform other duties.
  • Use a gram scale.
  • Knowledge of and ability to adhere to safety policies in the use of power tools, kilns and the daily operation of ceramic and 3-D studios.
  • Knowledge and experience in using woodshop equipment in a safe manner.
  • Basic understanding of woodshop equipment maintenance.
  • Capable of following instructions and work well with others.
  • Ability to manage and prioritize simultaneous projects while working independently.
  • Ability to learn the Parkland information system, Chem Watch System, and new programs as technology changes.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with loading and unloading bisque and glaze kilns.
  • Assist with firing electric and gas kilns.
  • Mixing clay, low fire, and stoneware glazes.
  • Oversee the condition of all equipment in the studio and kiln yard (kilns, wheels, clay mixer, slab roller, etc.).
  • Repair ceramic equipment when needed (including electric kilns, potter's wheels, and misc. ceramic studio equipment).
  • Ensure the maintenance of woodshop equipment and power tools.
  • Facilitate purchasing and inventory management of clay and glaze supplies/materials.
  • Maintain MSDS-Safety Data sheets and Chem Watch system.
  • Receive and distribute deliveries of various materials.
  • Cleaning floors occasionally if necessary (If a janitor takes a day or two off this sometimes become necessary).
  • Oversee open lab times and assist students as appropriate to their current instruction.
  • Assist with the annual High School Seminar and Art & Design Student Show, and other departmental events as requested.
  • Other duties as assigned.
