About The Position

The Academic Advisor I is responsible for driving engagement and empowering students to achieve their academic and career goals. This position will play a vital role in maximizing undergraduate student retention by building relationships with students and clarifying procedures and academic requirements for specific programs or majors.
Salary Range: Salary is Commensurate (Based on selected hire’s qualifications)

Special Note: This position works to cover shifts or take emergency calls on evenings, weekends, and holidays as required.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree.
• No required experience.
• Initiating, building, and maintaining effective relationships
• Communicating with others in a clear and concise manner that is audience appropriate
• Researching information to meet situation parameters
• Actively listening to determine speakers’ goals, needs, and/or challenges
• Organizing, prioritizing, and working effectively to meet goals and parameters of simultaneous projects

Nice To Haves

• Knowledge of student development in higher education
• Strong computer skills and familiarity with undergraduate curriculum
• TAMU academic advising experience
• Ability to lead students in developing education and personal goals

Responsibilities

• Provides academic advising for students grounded in tenets of practice outlined by the National Association of Academic Advising (NACADA) and appropriate academic advising and student development theories
• Advises for course selection, registration, academic planning, career and educational goal setting, appropriate resources, transitioning to the university, and retention issues
• Advises in both group and individual settings with current and prospective students
• Monitors academic progress and implements intervention strategies for students who receive academic alerts or who need assistance in maintaining or improving their academic standing
• Promotes student learning, development, and personal growth to empower self-sufficiency.
• Provides students with proactive referrals to appropriate resources and timely reminders, and other targeted individual and group communications using email, texting, and social media
• Assist with implementation of retention programs and interventions for all students
• Applies knowledge of State, University, and college policies and procedures and maintains accurate records of student contacts
