About The Position

Work with a purpose! Management & Training Corporation (MTC) operates the Imperial Regional Detention Center in Calexico, CA. We provide a safe and secure working environment for our staff while helping non-citizens gain valuable skills and treatment necessary for success upon release. What you'll do: Responsible for providing academic instruction to detainees in accordance with approved curricula. Directly supervises the tutor and library clerk. Provides detainees with direction in programing and educational opportunities in compliance with Management & Training Corporation (MTC) and customer directives.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and valid teaching certification required.
  • ESL and special education certifications are also required if instructing in these areas
  • One (1) year of related experience is preferred
  • Must be at least 21 years of age
  • Valid driver’s license in the state of California with an acceptable driving record required, unless waived by management.
  • Must successfully complete annual in-service training requirements and maintain appropriate facility clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and conduct classes for detainees in Adult Basic Education (ABE) and General Education Development (GED), life skills, cultural awareness, health education and special curriculum and other subjects selected to correspond with the ability and limitations of the class
  • Prepare special teaching plans, courses, activities and learning experiences appropriate for the specific detainees assigned
  • Incorporate new curriculum in the teaching process. (e.g., develops clarification or examples of application related to the subject matter)
  • Develop and maintain classrooms techniques that reflect professionalism and good discipline and enhance teaching, development of alternative teaching techniques and scenarios to maintain high motivation and interest in the subject areas
  • Utilize appropriate audio and visual teaching materials individualized to the specific need of the detainee
  • Acts as testing coordinator. Administers individual educational tests and learning aptitude tests and use the results for prescriptive instruction
  • Participate in staff conferences or in an endeavor to develop and improve educational programs
  • Counsel and advise detainees on academic problems
  • Coordinate activities and classes in conjunction with appropriate school districts or other involved parties
  • Assist in developing program and related educational materials as necessary for the establishment and maintenance of assigned classes
  • Adjust material and curriculum to the individual differences of the detainees assigned
  • Confer with detainees and the tutor to evaluate results of conducted classes
  • Responsible for the oversite of the library and library functions to include directly supervising the library clerk
  • Promote the development of positive social skills through modeling appropriate behaviors and intervening when inappropriate behaviors are observed
  • Maintain accountability of detainees and property; adhere to safety practices.
  • It is expected the incumbent will perform other duties as assigned within his/her scope of work as determined by management.
