About The Position

This position works to determine the appropriate academic accommodations for new and continuing students with disabilities each semester. As part of the Student Disability Center (SDC) professional staff, the Specialist encompasses the role of liaison, active consultant, and representative of the office to other entities on and off campus, as well as being an effective team member within the team. The position acts as an advocate for students with disabilities to ensure they are afforded an equal opportunity to benefit from, and participate in, any program sponsored by the university.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required in education, social work, psychology, or other human service-related area and a minimum of one year full-time professional experience working with individuals with disabilities OR a Master’s degree from an accredited institution.
  • Working knowledge regarding the federal non-discriminatory mandates of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act and its amendments.
  • Pre-employment Criminal Background Check (required for new hires).
  • The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the United States by the proposed start date; the Student Disability Center will not sponsor a visa for this position.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in special education, student affairs, higher education, counseling, psychology, social work or other human services or disability-related field
  • An equivalent of one-year experience working with people with disabilities in a higher education environment. (Two years of a graduate assistantship level role is equivalent to one-year full-time experience)
  • Previous experience determining accommodations for students with disabilities in an educational setting.
  • Experience working with, and familiar with the unique needs of individuals with specific disabilities (e.g., autism spectrum, head injuries, wounded warriors, etc.)
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with others.
  • Experience in advising, counseling, teaching, and/or supervising individuals from a variety of backgrounds, identities, and experiences.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the first point of contact with new students and contact for continuing students for academic accommodation requests.
  • Gather and assess information provided by new and continuing students regarding their need for academic and housing accommodations at the beginning of every semester and as needed throughout the semester.
  • Communicate the need for accommodations to appropriate personnel (e.g., faculty or other university staff) in a timely manner.
  • Determine the need for additional academic, personal, social, and cultural support of students and assist in developing appropriate plans for addressing these issues.
  • Discuss, advise, support and/or assist the student in problem solving to resolve crises.
  • Provide appropriate referrals to university resources, including but not limited to Academic Advancement Center, Assistive Technology Resource Center, Student Case Management, Student Financial Services, Health Network, etc.
  • Maintain and keep current student information in electronic files to document student participation.
