(https://natl.com/) National Interstate is looking for an Actuarial Trainee to join their team. This individual will work a hybrid schedule out of the Richfield office. National Interstate’s culture is built on connection, shared learning, and strong relationships. To support this, employees in this role are expected to be on-site four days a week, with the flexibility to work one day remotely. Core in‑office days are Tuesday–Thursday, with the fourth day determined by business needs. National Interstate and Vanliner’s Graduate Development Program, Ignition Ignition, National Interstate’s Graduate Development Program, is a month-long cohort that equips recent graduates with a comprehensive understanding of our business through a blend of instructor-led, self-paced, and hands-on training. Participants gain a strong understanding of our business model, value proposition, and how individual roles impact the organization while becoming immersed in our company culture. Through expert-led sessions, this program explores cross-functional areas, develops key professional skills, and strengthens relationships through team-building and social activities. The program is taking place in June 2026.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Statistics or a related field.
  • No prior work experience is required.
  • Prepares to sit for 1st Actuarial Exam.
  • Works on assignments of lower technical complexity and variety.
  • Develops proficiency in various actuarial techniques to learn to determine the most suitable method for each specific situation.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to use data to inform decisions.
  • Demonstrates interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment and across departments.
  • Develops knowledge about changes in regulations and industry trends and participates in professional development activities to stay current with actuarial best practices.
  • To advance within the actuary track, continued eligibility in the Actuarial Student Program and ongoing progress toward Fellowship are expected.

Responsibilities

  • Gains proficiency in developing and maintaining actuarial models to evaluate risk and inform pricing strategies.
  • Analyzes large datasets to identify trends and provide actionable insights.
  • Prepares clear and concise actuarial reports, ensuring clear communication of findings and recommendations.
  • Assists with presenting actuarial concepts and results to non-technical audiences.
  • Participates in collaborating with underwriting, finance, and product development teams to provide actuarial support.
  • Participates in cross-functional projects, contributing basic actuarial input and developing skills through collaboration with diverse teams.
  • Develops knowledge of relevant regulatory requirements and industry standards.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
