About The Position

The ‘Adaptive Rides Coordinator’ will organize adaptive wheelchair tricycle rides in Acadia National Park for visitors with mobility challenges in collaboration with MDI Wheelers. The MDI Wheelers is a 501(c)3 nonprofit created to help more people from the community get out on Acadia’s carriage roads with adaptive tricycles, driven by well-trained volunteers. The MDI Wheelers offer multiple adaptive tricycle rides each week on the carriage roads on Thursday and Friday mornings during the summer. The rides are open to the public and require preregistration. The Adaptive Rides Coordinator will facilitate the coordination and organization of these rides. The incumbent is not required to ride tricycles or bicycles but will have the opportunity if interested. The MDI Wheelers and Friends of Acadia are partnering to increase access to Acadia by hiring this position to facilitate adaptive rides. Friends of Acadia (FOA) is the non-profit partner to Acadia National Park and is committed to providing an accessible and welcoming space for visitors, volunteers, and staff from all backgrounds and lived experiences.

Requirements

  • Applicants are required to pass a background check and provide 3 professional references.
  • Excellent communication and people skills in-person, as well as over the phone and email.
  • Strong organizational skills to coordinate riders, volunteers, and organizations.
  • High level of empathy, patience, and sensitivity towards the special needs of others.
  • Comfort spending time with older individuals and those who have mobility challenges.
  • Familiarity with word processing and data entry.
  • Able to lift 25 pounds while moving equipment.
  • Valid Driver’s License and reliable vehicle for driving to job sites. Applicants will be expected to use their own vehicles and will be reimbursed for mileage beyond their daily commute.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinator with pilot and safety personnel for ~12 rides per week throughout the summer.
  • Coordinate with partner organizations and individuals who provide riders with transportation to the carriage roads to ensure they will be on site at designated meeting times.
  • Monitor weather and communicate with all parties if there needs to be a cancellation.
  • Facilitate waiver distribution and collection for all riders.
  • Assist volunteers in moving supplies to and from equipment trailer.
  • Assist with equipment inventory.
  • Submit incident reports and equipment maintenance needs to FOA staff.
  • Cooperate with head pilot volunteers on rides.
  • Maintain and create positive relationships with local organizations to expand ridership. Duties may include supporting additional accessibility opportunities such as the wheelchair accessible carriage at Acadia National Park.
  • Serve as roving accessibility ambassador for MDI Wheelers and FOA.
  • Facilitate volunteer sign-in sheets and waiver form completion.
  • Ensure safety of volunteers by assisting with training for pilots and safety positions on outdoor hazards, demonstrating proper tricycle usage, and responding to any incidents.
  • Communicate with volunteers regarding program coordination, such as sending a weekly email to all volunteers.
  • Record each ride (pilot, safety, rider) into a database.
  • Attend and participate in weekly team meetings.
  • Prepare paperwork for upcoming rides.
  • Generate activity reports as needed.
  • Share program updates with communications team throughout the season.
  • Assist with processing donations given to the MDI Wheelers.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
