About The Position

The Recreation Therapist is responsible for planning and implementing activity services, which involves defining and implementing treatment goals as a member of the interdisciplinary treatment team. The Recreational Therapist also utilize their specific area of expertise and provide continuous patient care, observation, interaction, and role modeling to patients.

Requirements

  • Valid Level One Fingerprint Clearance.
  • CPR certification and CPI are required prior to patient interaction.
  • Minimum of (1) year of related experience, with knowledge of psychiatric patient care techniques with understanding of mental illness.
  • Effective oral and written communication.
  • Ability to problem solve, utilizing goof judgement.
  • Ability to adhere to safety policies and procedures.
  • Ability to recognize the importance of adapting to the carious patient age groups (adolescents and adults).
  • Utilize theoretical concepts to guide the effective practice within specific standards of care for adolescent and adult age groups.
  • Excellent leadership skills.
  • Ability to understand and comply with government regulations, regulatory standards, and hospital policies.
  • Ability to initiate action, take personal responsibility, suggest improvements, and solve problems within the scope of job.

  • Knowledge in one or more program disciplines (i.e., art, occupational, dance, recreational, and/or music therapy).
  • Ability to exercise self-control in potentially volatile situations such as being verbally or physically confronted in a threatening or aggressive manner; must be able to work and concentrate amidst distractions such as noise, conversation, and foot traffic; ability to handle interruptions often and be able to move from one task to another; must be flexible and not easily frustrated in dealing with differences of opinions.
  • Ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, grasp, and be able to perceive the attributes of objects such as size, shape, temperature, and/or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of the fingertips.
  • Ability to express and exchange ideas via spoken work during activities in which they must convey detail or important spoken instructions to others accurately, sometimes quickly and loudly.
  • Ability to express and exchange ideas via written assignments effectively and accurately.
  • Hearing to perceive the nature of sound with no less than 40 db loss @ Hz, 1000 Hz, and 2000 Hz with or without correction; ability to perceive detailed information through oral communication and to make fine discriminations in sound.
  • Performs repetitive motions with wrists, hands, and fingers.
  • Ability to occasionally handle hazardous/infectious waste.
  • Must be able to address and prioritize multiple tasks and/or demands within established time frames.
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university is required in Recreational Therapy/ Music/ Art /Occupational/ Dance /Movement Therapies or related field.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree preferred.
  • Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts therapeutic group activities and documents participation and interventions in the patient’s medical chart.
  • Provides therapy in the form of dance movement, art, recreational, individual, substance abuse and group psychotherapy as needed, per licensure, registration and/or certification.
  • Demonstrate responsibility for observation and application of sound judgement in patient’s physical and mental condition.
  • Assess patient needs and facilitate activities that are appropriate to age, development, needs, and interests of the patients served.
  • Communicate changes in patient’s condition, including medical or behavioral, with nursing staff.
  • Ensure timely documentation of interventions and ensure interventions are based on the patient’s treatment plan.
  • Works collaboratively with all treatment team members to create a treatment environment that supports patient care and customer service.
  • Apply appropriate crisis interventions and ensure interventions are appropriate for patient’s level of care.
  • Conform with and abide by all regulations, policies, work procedures and instructions.
  • Ability to get assigned work done in an acceptable manner, in the time allotted, and with minimal prompting.
  • Assist patients in achieving their optimum level of independent functioning.
