The Nurse Practitioner (NP) shall provide occupational health clinical services to support a diverse federal workforce operating in mission-critical roles across a variety of operational environments. Services are focused on protecting workforce health, ensuring medical readiness, and maintaining the stability and continuity of the Washington DC workforce. Clinical services include, but are not limited to, conducting comprehensive health history reviews and physical examinations for pre-employment evaluations, periodic and targeted occupational health surveillance examinations, and return-to-work or fitness-for-duty determinations as applicable. The NP will review and interpret diagnostic studies associated with occupational health programs, including laboratory testing, audiometry, vision screening, spirometry, and other job-related medical surveillance components. The NP will collaborate closely with the clinic’s multidisciplinary medical team including the Nurse Manager, nursing staff, and Medical Assistants—to ensure efficient, high-quality delivery of occupational health services and to support optimal examinee throughput. The NP will also provide basic first aid support for employees presenting to the clinic as needed. The NP will perform clinical duties under the medical oversight of the Medical Director and Chief Medical Officer and in accordance with established medical protocols, occupational health guidelines, and program-specific medical surveillance requirements established by the medical cadre. The NP reports operationally to the Program Manager and functions as an integral member of the onsite occupational health team. The position requires collaboration, adaptability, and cross-training to support clinic operations and ensure continuity of services. All healthcare services shall be delivered in accordance with applicable federal regulations, occupational health standards, evidence-based medical practice, and the ethical principles of the medical profession.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner (NP) program approved by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) or the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN).
  • Current, active, unrestricted NP license in at least one U.S. state, territory, or the District of Columbia.
  • Current national board certification as a Nurse Practitioner in an appropriate specialty area (e.g., Family Nurse Practitioner, Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner).
  • Minimum of five (5) years of clinical experience in a healthcare setting, preferably including occupational health, primary care, emergency medicine, urgent care, or related clinical practice.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association or equivalent nationally recognized organization.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing, and to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Proficiency in the use of standard office and clinical software systems, including Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel, as well as electronic medical record (EMR) systems.
  • Strong clinical judgment, organizational skills, and the ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment.
  • Ability to successfully complete and maintain all required background investigations, including a Tier 4 (High-Risk Public Trust) background investigation, as required for work within a federal law enforcement environment.
  • Must successfully pass and maintain required background checks, credentialing, and drug screening in accordance with federal contract requirements and Summit Healthcare Solutions policies.

Nice To Haves

  • Current Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) National Registry Medical Examiner certification.
  • Prior clinical experience in occupational medicine or occupational health settings, including employee health, workplace injury management, and regulatory medical surveillance programs.
  • Certification as a Certified Occupational Hearing Conservationist (COHC) or equivalent training in occupational audiometric testing and hearing conservation programs.
  • Completion of NIOSH-approved spirometry training for the performance and interpretation of occupational pulmonary function testing.
  • Experience with Department of Homeland Security (DHS)/Occupational Health and Medical Surveillance programs, including familiarity with federal workforce health requirements.
  • Experience performing fitness-for-duty evaluations, return-to-work assessments, and medical surveillance examinations in safety-sensitive environments.
  • Familiarity with OSHA, NIOSH, and federal occupational health regulations applicable to workplace medical surveillance programs.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive health history reviews with examinees, ensuring accurate documentation of medical, occupational, and exposure history.
  • Perform high-quality occupational health physical examinations for pre-employment, periodic, and surveillance evaluations.
  • Review, interpret, and analyze medical screening and diagnostic results with examinees, including laboratory studies and occupational testing results.
  • Provide medical evaluations for personnel in safety-sensitive positions including but not limited to Special Agents, Uniformed Division personnel, Investigative Protection Officers, Technical Security Investigators, Protective Support Technicians, Operations Support Technicians, Physical Security Specialists, Detection Systems Specialists, and other designated personnel.
  • Support medical surveillance programs including, but not limited to, firearms instructors and firing range personnel, respirator users, counter sniper teams, forensic services personnel, and other employees requiring occupational health monitoring.
  • Review and interpret occupational health diagnostic studies including audiometry, spirometry, vision screening, laboratory testing, and respirator clearance documentation.
  • Develop and implement health promotion, injury prevention, and therapeutic plans consistent with the examinee’s medical condition and occupational environment.
  • Provide preventive health counseling and education to promote employee wellness, safety, and disease prevention.
  • Educate examinees on preventive care, lifestyle modifications, and workplace health considerations relevant to their duties.
  • Conduct medical record reviews and support medical determinations in accordance with established clinical guidelines, medical protocols, and USSS medical cadre training.
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and compliant documentation within medical record systems.
  • Ensure all medical information is managed in compliance with applicable privacy laws, medical policies, and regulatory requirements.
  • Collaborate with the Nurse Manager, nursing staff, Medical Assistants, and Medical Director to ensure efficient clinic workflow and high-quality occupational health service delivery.
  • Provide clinical support to the onsite medical team and assist with screening tests and clinic procedures as needed.
  • Support clinic operations to enhance examinee throughput while maintaining quality and examinee safety.
  • Serve as a liaison by coordinating continuity of care with appropriate healthcare providers and authorized agencies when necessary.
  • Participate in Quality Assurance (QA) and quality improvement initiatives to maintain clinical excellence and compliance with occupational health standards.
  • Maintain current knowledge of occupational health regulations, federal guidelines, and evidence-based clinical practices.
  • Maintain approved work systems, procedures, and policies consistent with Summit Healthcare Solutions and federal occupational health requirements.
  • Comply with all Summit Healthcare Solutions policies, standards, and professional conduct expectations.
