Position Overview The Advanced Practice Provider (APP)- Float works collaboratively with physician sponsors and supervisors to provide comprehensive oncology care across all West Cancer Center hospital and clinic locations. This role supports both inpatient and outpatient settings, including hospital rounding, infusion coverage, and clinic-based care, based on organizational need. The APP- Float delivers high-quality direct and indirect patient care, ensures continuity across care settings, and serves as a flexible clinical resource to support patient access, safety, and outcomes in accordance with established protocols and applicable state regulations.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program.
  • Advanced practice licensure/certification in the states of Tennessee and Mississippi.
  • If Nurse Practitioner, active RN license in both Tennessee and Mississippi.
  • Certificate to prescribe and current DEA registration for both states.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association.
  • Excellent organizational, follow-up, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Strong problem-solving and clinical decision-making abilities.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, multi-site environment.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Proficiency in EMR systems and standard computer applications.
  • Flexibility to change locations or assignments on short notice based on patient care needs.

Responsibilities

  • Assess and examine patients; collect and document medical histories.
  • Order, interpret, and incorporate diagnostic laboratory and radiology results into care plans.
  • Plan, order, and manage treatments within scope of practice and approved protocols.
  • Perform procedures as deemed competent and appropriate to specialty (e.g., bone marrow aspirates, Ommaya taps).
  • Write prescriptions in accordance with state regulations.
  • Provide patient education and counseling regarding diagnoses and medications; document education in the EMR.
  • Assist with obtaining patient consent for chemotherapy and immunotherapy.
  • Communicate and consult with physicians regarding new patient issues and care plans.
  • Review pathology and medical records in collaboration with physicians.
  • Identify patients eligible for clinical research trials in coordination with research staff.
  • Triage and manage patient needs between visits, including symptom management and medication refills.
  • Coordinate care with internal departments and external facilities to ensure continuity of care.
  • Conduct daily hospital rounds on assigned patients.
  • Prepare organized and concise patient reports for physician rounding.
  • Perform comprehensive patient assessments and examinations.
  • Develop, implement, and adjust inpatient treatment plans in collaboration with the care team.
  • Write admission histories, physicals, and daily progress notes in the EMR.
  • Coordinate inpatient-to-outpatient transitions, including follow-up scheduling.
  • Provide clinical oversight for patients receiving treatment in infusion areas.
  • Monitor laboratory results and clear patients for treatment as appropriate.
  • Respond immediately to emergent patient situations, including Rapid Response Team events when applicable.
  • Serve as a clinical resource and mentor for infusion nursing staff.
  • Manage caseloads efficiently, ensuring timely documentation and billing support as required.
  • Maintain professional appearance and adhere to clinic safety policies and procedures.
  • Participate in rounds, meetings, tumor boards, and professional training as required.
  • Meet continuing education requirements to maintain licensure and certification.
  • Assist with orientation and mentoring of new APPs and staff as assigned.
  • Maintain flexibility to adjust locations and assignments based on operational needs.
