About The Position

The National Police Federation is currently hiring an Advisor, Government Relations (20-month term), to join our team. Overview of the Role: The Advisor, Government Relations, is primarily responsible for leading files and areas of work in the Government Relations Team and for managing the work related to a particular geographic area that the National Police Federation works in. The National Police Federation (NPF) represents ~20,000 RCMP Members serving across Canada and internationally. We are the largest police union in Canada. The NPF is focused on improving public safety for all Canadians, including our Members by advocating for much-needed investment in the public safety continuum. This includes investments in police resourcing and modern equipment, as well as social programs including health, addiction, and housing supports to enhance safety and livability in the many communities we serve, large and small, across Canada. Our head office is located in Ottawa, but our 70+ staff work remotely across Canada. Requirements

  • Education in Political Science, Public Policy, equivalent and/or combination of work experience.
  • 5 years’ experience in government relations, either working in provincial/federal politics or in an association or union setting, with consistent progression in responsibility.
  • Must be available for overnight travel 4-6 times per year.
  • High level of knowledge around government decision making and legislative processes in Canada on the federal, provincial, and municipal levels.
  • Must understand core government relations work such as: crafting stakeholder lists, preparing briefs or report writing, and writing formal communications to government.
  • Highly proficient with Microsoft Office productivity tools.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Strong writing skills.
  • Ability to adapt to changing situations, new ideas and concepts.
  • Sound judgement and tact.
  • High level of attention to detail.
  • High level of problem-solving capabilities.
  • Ability to multi-task; take the initiative; be proactive; flexible.
  • Excellent ability to communicate both verbally and written, with a diverse workforce and facilitate successful performance in a team-based environment.
  • Ability to obtain Secret Level Security Clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Project Management
  • Manage projects or pieces of work by tracking timelines, next steps, and other important details.
  • Identify important information such as key dates or potential barriers to our work and provide solutions or advice to management on how to overcome those issues.
  • Draft documents
  • Draft submissions to all levels of government related to our campaigns, government budget cycles.
  • Draft correspondence to key public safety stakeholders.
  • Draft internal updates for NPF Members and staff.
  • Liaise with communications department for the production of government relations products.
  • Lead meetings and discussions
  • Prepare meeting agendas, guide discussions, prepare meeting minutes and follow-up action items.
  • Attend in-person meetings in the NPF National Office and in the NCR, as required.
  • Monitor developments and key relevant issues
  • Track relevant developments in our areas of responsibility by monitoring the news, legislative debates, government announcements, committee meetings, etc.
  • Update management and Members of the Board of Directors, as required, while providing an analysis and summary of suggested next steps.
  • Development of government relations strategies
  • Prepare and implement a work plan and strategy for key campaigns.
  • Organize, prepare for, and attend meetings with government officials
  • Prepare and send meeting invitations for government officials.
  • Prepare briefing notes and relevant information to share with Board Members to help them prepare for those meetings.
  • Attend meetings with the Board Members and provide support such as taking notes, tracking time and providing additional technical information as required.
