About The Position

The Aerospace Camp Experience (ACE) Support & Inclusion Counselor supports The Museum of Flight by providing direct, additional support to identified campers to facilitate a safe, fun, and successful Aerospace Camp Experience (ACE). This position is assigned to campers with specific health, social, or behavioral needs that warrant extra care and attention. Primary responsibilities of this position includes the execution of relevant themed programming emphasizing STEM subjects that include aviation, space, robotics, and beyond. This role works collaboratively with camp leadership to facilitate best camp outcomes. Success in this role requires an understanding and willingness to work with campers, such as those who are neuro-divergent and other diverse clientele. Good communication skills and timely responses to emerging needs to provide excellent customer service is essential.

Requirements

• High School diploma or equivalent is required.
• Two (2) years of work experience in structured youth education programming.
• Prior experience in classroom, camps, experiential, formal or informal education preferred.
• Work or other relevant experience working with youth with specific needs, specifically Autism, developmental delays, general anxiety, sensory processing disorders, and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorders.
• Elementary knowledge of best practices in working with youth with specific needs, specifically Autism, developmental delays, general anxiety, sensory processing disorders, and ADHD.
• Knowledge of STEM subjects, such as aviation, astronomy, robotics, and/or aerospace preferred.
• Ability to work with a diverse group of people, including staff, campers of all ages, parents, and volunteers.
• Ability to make solid decisions quickly under pressure and comfortable leading and directing staff and camp participants in a respectful and professional manner.
• Proven effective interpersonal skills including verbal and written communication skills.
• Competent planning, prioritization, and organizational skills.
• Demonstrated capability in prioritizing and completing multiple projects while being flexible in a changing environment.
• Ability to prioritize work activities and use time efficiently in a collaborative team environment with a wide variety of individuals and departments.
• Ability to work both independently and with a team.
• Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate, verbally and in writing.
• Current First Aid, CPR and AED certification, or may be obtained prior to the first day of camp through the provided Museum certification training or other.
• Able to work in an active camp environment within the public space of a busy museum.
• This position requires use of stairs, repetitive wrist and arm movement; grabbing, reaching, pulling, The ability to bend, carry, reach to the side, front and overhead, push, pull, focus, walk, stand, twist and squat are frequent requirements for this position.
• Must be able to be physically active for the duration of a shift.
• Occasional overhead activities, working from ladders and step stools.
• Occasionally must be able to lift up to 50 pounds with or without assistance.
• Onsite attendance is essential to perform the duties of this position.
• Oversight of minors; 18 years of age is required.

Nice To Haves

• Associates Degree preferred.
• Have or actively working towards a degree in Special Education, Occupational Therapy, Speech Pathology, Social Work, Counseling, Psychology, or a similar field is highly preferred.
• Knowledge of STEM subjects, such as aviation, astronomy, robotics, and/or aerospace preferred.

Responsibilities

• Assist Lead Counselors with the direction, development, supervision, and organization of campers.
• In coordination with ACE leadership, provide direct support to designated and/or identified campers within the camp program ensuring a safe, fun, and appropriate learning environment.
• Respond to emergent camper needs that warrant a specific and timely response.
• Consistently communicate with counselors, ACE leadership, and caregivers regarding assigned camper(s)’ daily experiences, establishing a collaborative approach to camper support.
• Assist with the teaching of camp activities.
• Actively participate in all program areas as assigned.
• Occasionally substitute as Lead Counselor.
• Work to ensure a safe, fun, and educational environment for campers.
• Bring all personnel and safety issues to the Lead Counselor or ACE Manager for oversight and employment related actions.
• Support camper(s)’ emotional and social development, encouraging understanding of others and positive self-concepts.
• Follow all ACE and Museum policies and procedures, including those related to health and safety, medical and disciplinary situations, emergency procedures, and child abuse prevention.
• Assist with the preparation and organization of all equipment and supplies, ensuring materials and supplies are prepared for camp sessions.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
