About The Position

The N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services provides services that promote and improve agriculture, agribusiness, and forests; protect consumers and businesses; and conserve farmland and natural resources for the prosperity of all North Carolinians. The Department employs approximately 2,000 employees. The Cherry Research Station is hiring an Agricultural Technician II with growth potential for a fulfilling career in agriculture. Our mission is to serve as a platform for agricultural research to make farming more efficient, productive, and profitable, while maintaining a sound environment and providing consumers with safe and affordable products. This agricultural technician II position will support research efforts in the Crops Unit. Our ideal candidate will have farming experience in crop production that includes cotton, corn, soybeans, and small grains. In addition, the ability to operate various farm equipment such as tractors, combines, planters, sprayers, and other machinery. The individual in this position may be assigned to work extended hours, weekends, and holidays on a rotating basis as workload requires.

Requirements

  • General knowledge of agricultural practices
  • Ability and willingness to support agricultural animal production as demand and scheduling requires.
  • Ability to properly mix and apply common agricultural chemicals.
  • Ability to perform long periods of repetitive reaching, stooping, standing, bending, and lifting of 50 lbs.
  • Must have a valid driver's license.
  • Must possess or qualify for certification/licensure within twelve months of employment for the following:
  • Valid Commercial Driver's License (Non-Excepted Intrastate)
  • Forklift Driver Certificate
  • Public Pesticide Applicator License
  • High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and one year of experience in the general care and management of animals or crops, or laboratory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Routine tasks such as general grounds maintenance, assisting with the layout of research plots, planting, cultivation, spray applications and harvesting.
  • Operation and maintenance of farm equipment.
  • Other duties as assigned, including livestock/animal welfare tasks.
