About The Position

Boston Scientific's AI Engineering team is focused on applying Generative AI and Agentic AI solutions to improve productivity, accelerate innovation, and enhance decision-making across the enterprise. As an AI Engineering Intern, you will work with cutting-edge foundational models — including Large Language Models and multimodal models — to design and build custom GenAI applications and intelligent agent workflows. Our team does not train foundational models; instead, we leverage leading AI platforms and integrate them with enterprise systems, data sources, and tools to deliver scalable, secure, and responsible AI solutions within a regulated medical device environment.

Requirements

  • Must graduate between Fall 2026 – Spring 2028 (rising juniors or seniors).
  • Currently pursuing a bachelor's or graduate-level degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or Data Science.
  • 1–2 years of hands-on Python development experience, including writing scripts, building applications, and working with Python libraries (e.g., NumPy, Pandas, Requests, or similar).
  • 1+ year of experience working with REST APIs, including consuming and integrating third-party services into applications.
  • 1+ year of demonstrated understanding of Generative AI and Large Language Models, such as through coursework, personal projects, research, or prior internship experience.
  • Must be able to commit to one of the following full internship program periods: May 18th – August 7th OR May 26th – August 14th.
  • Must be eligible to work in the U.S. without company sponsorship, now or in the future, for employment-based work authorization.
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from the Marlborough, MA or Maple Grove/Arden Hills, MN Boston Scientific office location.

Nice To Haves

  • 1+ year of experience building LLM-powered applications using APIs such as OpenAI, Anthropic, Azure OpenAI, or similar — including chat systems, RAG implementations, or tool-use workflows.
  • Exposure to agent orchestration frameworks (e.g., LangChain, LangGraph, AutoGen, CrewAI) or multi-step AI workflows.
  • Hands-on familiarity with cloud environments: Azure (preferred), AWS, or GCP.
  • 6+ months of experience with backend development, relational or vector databases, or enterprise system integration.
  • Interest in secure AI deployment, human-in-the-loop systems, and responsible AI practices.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to break down ambiguous problems independently.
  • Passion for applying AI to meaningful healthcare challenges.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in designing, building, and deploying custom Generative AI applications using foundational model APIs.
  • Support development of Agentic AI workflows that orchestrate tools, APIs, and enterprise systems.
  • Contribute to prompt engineering, evaluation, and iterative optimization of GenAI solutions.
  • Help implement Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) pipelines integrating structured and unstructured enterprise data.
  • Develop backend services, APIs, and automation components that enable AI-powered workflows.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders (Engineering, R&D, Quality, Regulatory, Operations, IT) to identify and prototype high-impact AI use cases.
  • Participate in testing, validation, documentation, and responsible AI governance practices in a regulated environment.
  • Contribute to experimentation with agent orchestration frameworks and emerging enterprise AI technologies.
