MGB Cancer Institute at BWH About this role: The solid tumor hematology oncology NP provides comprehensive ambulatory care to one or more disease specific medical oncology patient populations. With an interdisciplinary team approach, this provider promotes a collaborative relationship between all providers, professional nurses and administrative staff, to ensure continuity of patient care and efficient use of resources. The NP is responsible for the assessment and management of solid tumor medical oncology patients, including diagnostic and therapeutic interventions and development and implementation of appropriate plans of care across the trajectory of illness for patients. In addition to providing direct and indirect patient care, the hematology oncology APP serves as a role model for professional advanced practice and participates in the professional development of the team through teaching, committee involvement or quality and safety initiatives. The hematology oncology APP will provide thorough, compassionate, culturally sensitive clinical care and should demonstrate operational flexibility and strong leadership, problem-solving and communication skills in order to work effectively with other members of the team. -Performs comprehensive histories and physical examinations. -Completes high quality and timely documentation. - Participates in scheduled encounters, maintains capacity for urgent care for the evaluation for complex symptom evaluation and management and improves access for newly diagnosed hematology oncology patients. -Orders, interprets, and evaluates appropriate laboratory and diagnostic tests. -Ensues appropriate diagnostic procedures occur in a timely manner through careful coordination with other services such as radiology, facilitating various clinic appointments, communicating with patients regarding test results, and providing coverage for the team - Performs (oversees/assures completion of) specialized procedures particular to the select medical oncology population mutually agreed upon with collaborating physician. - Follows and manages patients (in collaboration with MD) enhancing continuity of care across the trajectory of illness. -Develops appropriate plans of care and follow-up based on the outcomes of diagnostic, laboratory, and physical examination findings across the trajectory of illness -Facilitates patient movement through the system and efficient use of resources through interdepartmental collaboration. -Facilitates and co-manages communications between physicians, patients, family, and staff. -Orders medications and writes prescriptions, inclusive of standard of care antineoplastics and oncologic investigational new drugs according to organizational and regulatory policies and procedures. -Participates in research efforts to advance knowledge and to promote research-based practice. - Appreciates the complex medical environments of cancer patients including, but not limited to, those with advanced malignancy or organ dysfunction and the risk for complex drug interactions. -Maintains and updates clinical knowledge and skills based on current health care practice/research. Job Summary Summary: The Nurse Practitioner is an advanced practice registered nurse who has acquired specialized knowledge and skills through completion of a nurse practitioner program. The practitioner has the credentials to function in an expanded nursing role and is responsible for the daily management of selected patients. The practitioner has responsibility for the assessment and management of patients, including diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, and the continuous implementation and evaluation of an appropriate plan of care. The Nurse Practitioner works with their collaborating physician in accordance with mutually developed practice guidelines, members of the care team, and is responsible to the Nursing Director or Executive Nursing Director for the area for issues specific to the discipline of nursing. Satisfactory completion of an approved formal education program that has as its objective the preparation of professional nurses to practice as nurse practitioners. ANA or other appropriate nursing certification in the area of practice and authorization by the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing to practice in the expanded role. DEA for prescription writing. Working Conditions - Works in a variety of patient care environments where there may be exposure to communicable disease and hazardous materials.

Requirements

Master's in Nursing (MSN) (or) Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) (or) PhD Degree in Nursing required.
Completion of a Master’s or post Masters’ degree in Adult program accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) or the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC).
Satisfactory completion of an approved formal education program which has as its objective the preparation of professional nurses to practice as nurse practitioner.
Current Adult/Gerontology (AGNP) or Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) Certification by an accredited APRN certifying body required.
DEA registration required and current APRN License to practice in Massachusetts required.
Minimum 5 years’ current nurse practitioner experience caring for an Oncology focused patient population required.
Clinical nurse practitioner experience in an ambulatory practice managing a solid tumor oncology focused patient population required.
Proficiency with Epic EMR.
Strong managerial presence and ability to provide & direct feedback and guidance to staff.
Strong interpersonal communication skills.
Ability to function effectively in a fast-paced environment.
Results-oriented and exhibits a strong attention to detail.
Expert clinical judgment skills to function in the independent role.

Nice To Haves

Oncology Nursing Board Certification strongly preferred.
Clinical experience ordering and/or administering antineoplastics preferred.
Telemedicine experience.
