About The Position

An anesthesia technician (AT) is a specialized healthcare professional who provides clinical and technical support to the anesthesia care team. They are responsible for preparing, maintaining, and troubleshooting complex anesthesia equipment to ensure patient safety during surgical procedures. Key Responsibilities Equipment Preparation: Set up, calibrate, and test anesthesia machines, ventilators, and monitoring devices (EKG, blood pressure cuffs, pulse oximeters) before surgeries. Clinical Assistance: Assist anesthesiologists and CRNAs during the induction and reversal of anesthesia. This includes positioning patients and maintaining patient airways. Monitoring & Support: Monitor patient vital signs during procedures and alert the medical team to any abnormal changes. Supply Management: Restock anesthesia carts, manage inventory of medications and gases (oxygen, nitrous oxide), and ensure all items are within expiration dates. Maintenance & Sterilization: Clean and sterilize reusable equipment and instruments according to infection control protocols. Emergency Response: Provide immediate assistance during critical events, such as code situations or difficult intubations, by delivering required supplies or equipment.

Requirements

  • Education: A high school diploma or GED is the minimum requirement; however, many employers require completion of an accredited Associate degree program in Anesthesia Technology.
  • Certifications: BLS/ACLS: Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is mandatory.
  • Skills: Strong medical terminology knowledge, manual dexterity, attention to detail, and the ability to work under high pressure in fast-paced environments.
  • Physical Demands: Ability to stand for long periods, lift heavy equipment (up to 45 lbs), and assist with patient transport/positioning.
