About The Position

The Animal Control Officer will be responsible for all of the daily job functions of an Animal Control Officer. Duties may include, enforcing ordinances, ensuring rabies control, and perform educational programs regarding animal control and protecting the public from problem animals.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license along with a clean MVR check.
  • Must have a high level of integrity, attention to detail, punctual, and reliable.
  • Must be able to learn, comprehend, and apply all County or departmental policies, practices, and procedures necessary to function effectively in the position.
  • Requires the ability to exchange information for the purpose of clarifying details within well-established policies, procedures and standards.
  • Requires the ability to operate, maneuver and/or control the actions of equipment, machinery, tools, and/or materials used in performing essential functions.
  • Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference data and information.
  • Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
  • Requires the ability to carry out detailed but routine written or oral instructions.
  • Requires the ability to exercise judgment in situations characterized by repetitive or short cycle operations covered by well-established procedures or sequences.

  • Tasks require the regular and, at times, sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and that may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds).

Responsibilities

  • Officers respond to citizen complaints of stray, vicious, sick, injured or diseased animals.
  • Works with authorities on various animals impound needs, issues citations, and provide courtroom testimony.
  • Monitors and ensures all animals are in good health, cages are disinfected and clean, and the animals are properly fed, watered and proper medication is given if needed.
  • Investigates cruelty and abandonment of domestic animals and livestock and ensures all records are in order for animals being held as evidence for court.
  • Works closely with Gilmer County Sheriff’s Department to prosecute violators.
  • Investigates reported bite cases and follows through with rabies quarantine checks, verification of quarantine, preparation and transportation of specimens to the state lab for testing.
  • Assists the Director when needed with the euthanasia and disposal of vicious and/or terminally ill animals.
  • Provides informational tours to schools and various community groups.
  • Assists with kennel responsibilities as necessary.
  • Must be able to work weekends.
  • Additional duties as assigned.
