About The Position

Applies specialized engineering expertise within the field of high-energy physics to support PI-led scientific research by contributing to the design, development, testing, and implementation of conceptual and detailed engineering solutions. Under general direction, assists with the creation of designs, models, and prototypes using computer-aided design, documentation systems, databases, and manufacturing and/or inspection software tools. In collaboration with principal investigators, senior engineers, and collaborators from partnering institutions, implements and tests specialized electronics and firmware for use in experimental research environments. Supports the commissioning, installation, and maintenance of hardware components and subsystems for collaborative experiments, which may be located at national or international laboratories. Contributes to the programming and configuration of application-specific firmware and software, and assists with system integration, validation, and troubleshooting activities. Participates in ongoing operation and maintenance activities by diagnosing issues, supporting upgrades, and documenting engineering solutions within assigned areas of responsibility. Work is performed primarily through individual technical contributions that are integrated into small-, mid-, and large-scale project teams. Applies professional judgment within defined parameters and established engineering practices. Receives general guidance on project objectives and priorities; work products are reviewed for technical accuracy and sound reasoning. May provide technical guidance and task coordination for undergraduate and graduate student assistants or technicians, including training on tools, processes, and safety practices. May assist principal investigators with the preparation of technical documentation, reports, or proposal materials by contributing engineering input and supporting information.
