Apprentice Operating Engineer – Union - JLL What this job involves: The Apprentice Operating Engineer plays a critical role in maintaining optimal facility operations through expert technical skills in operating, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing complex building systems. This position requires demonstrated technical expertise in one specialized craft area while maintaining multi-skilled capabilities across electrical, HVAC, plumbing, and central utility plant operations. You'll contribute directly to JLL's commitment to operational excellence by ensuring all facility equipment operates safely and efficiently while delivering exceptional service that meets our clients' demanding operational requirements and cost optimization goals.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or state equivalent
  • Minimum of two years of college or related trade school education
  • Minimum of four years' experience in electrician trade OR four years' experience in HVAC/refrigeration trade
  • City of Chicago Stationary Engineers License
  • Ability to lift minimum of 80 lbs and perform physically demanding tasks including climbing, bending, and overhead work
  • Thorough knowledge of building systems with focus on energy cost optimization
  • Demonstrated ability to perform all work using proper personal protective equipment (PPE)

Nice To Haves

  • Practical experience with thermodynamic, electrical, and mechanical systems
  • Experience with computer-controlled equipment and building automation systems
  • Working knowledge of computer applications including Word and Excel
  • Experience in incident investigation and safety hazard assessment
  • Previous experience navigating multistory office buildings and rooftop equipment access
  • Familiarity with contractor management and quality monitoring processes

Responsibilities

  • Operate facility systems safely in accordance with all government and regulatory requirements while enforcing safety protocols
  • Perform maintenance, monitoring, and repairs on mechanical, plumbing, structural, and fire life safety systems to maintain applicable standards
  • Maintain HVAC systems and equipment at optimum performance levels through cleaning, inspecting, and parts replacement
  • Record equipment readings and make necessary adjustments to ensure proper system operation and energy efficiency
  • Monitor contractor pricing and work quality while reviewing monthly Client Service Request summaries to identify recurring issues
  • Respond to customer inquiries professionally and assist management with emergency situations including fire alarms and hazardous conditions
  • Maintain clean and safe workplace conditions while ensuring proper storage, usage, and disposal of hazardous materials
