About The Position

The internship will provide the applicant with an introduction into penguin and seal husbandry, exhibit maintenance, positive reinforcement training and environmental enrichment. At the end of the internship the applicant will have a basic knowledge of the above skills and techniques as well as a basic understanding of the biology of penguins and pinnipeds. INTERN BENEFITS: Learn daily husbandry and nutrition of a diverse collection of penguins and pinnipeds. Learn exhibit maintenance. Learn positive reinforcement and environmental enrichment techniques. Learn proper food preparation techniques and understand system diets. Learn common and scientific names of penguins and Pinnipeds. Work closely with aquarium biologists and interact with guests.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Must have valid driver’s license
  • Must be reliable and responsible
  • Must be organized, self-motivated, with a desire to see projects through to completion
  • Must have a strong desire to work with animals and provide them with the best care available
  • Must be observant and able to work with other employees, volunteers and the public in a polite, patient manner
  • Available for overtime, both non-emergency and emergency situations
  • Subject to possibility of bites, stings and other work related biological risks
  • Work in water, both man-made and natural, with temperatures ranging from 45 to 90°
  • Heavy lifting (greater than 50 pounds on occasion), walking and working within a wet environment
  • Outdoor work on occasion, under a variety of conditions: cold weather, hot weather, rain, mud, ocean environments and dry land

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in the handling and care of animals preferred
  • S.C.U.B.A. certification preferred, must be a swimmer and willing to take S.C.U.B.A. certification if required in work area

Responsibilities

  • Professional Animal Care
  • Report to work location by scheduled time
  • Maintain clean, professional appearance
  • Perform daily routines as scheduled
  • Maintain appropriate animal records
  • Assist with animal treatments as directed
  • Assist with animal movements as directed
  • Communication
  • Conduct yourself in a helpful, patient manner with staff, volunteers and guests
  • Participate in various public presentations, with or without animals
  • Communicate problems with animals and exhibits to Assistant Curators
  • Facility Maintenance
  • Observe and maintain assigned areas
  • Report supply needs to Assistant Curators
  • Any and all other duties as assigned; duties are subject to change as management deems necessary to best serve the needs of Moody Gardens
  • Must be on-time!
  • Take direction and be willing to perform tasks as assigned.
  • Work well with staff, volunteers and other interns.
  • Work 16-20 hours a week for at least 12 weeks in fall/spring semesters and 20-40 hours a week for 10 weeks in summer semester.
  • Set schedule prior to the start of the internship with morning shifts running from 8:00am to 12:00pm and afternoon shifts running from 1:00pm to 5:00pm.
  • Capability of lifting a minimum of 50 pounds, climbing ladders, stairs, and work around saltwater.
  • Interactions with Moody Gardens® visitors.
  • Be prepared to answer questions from the public.
  • Must present to a formal presentation at the end of the internship
