Requirements

  • Current American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer, American Red Cross First Aid, American Red Cross Lifeguard Training, and American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor.
  • Water Safety Instructor certification within six (6) months of hire date and LGT Instructor certification within six (6) months of hire date.
  • Approved Criminal Background Investigation check if over 18 years of age.
  • Able to pass pre employment drug test.
  • Able to pass Center prepared swim test.
  • Working knowledge of lifesaving techniques including backboard rescue.
  • Minimum of two years aquatic experience which may include: lifeguard duties, supervisory duties, swim team experience, teaching, swim lessons, specialty classes, etc.
  • Strong swimming and life-saving abilities.
  • Good leadership and human relations skills.
  • Ability to work with a team.
  • Problem solving skills and organizational skills.
  • Alert, attentive, and responsible.

Responsibilities

  • Assume responsibility for the effective performance of site supervisors, lifeguards, and junior lifeguards.
  • Ensure that lifeguards are alert and attentive while on duty and that all patrons are well supervised in the pools and on the decks by scheduling the optimal number of lifeguards.
  • Ensure that safety regulations and rules are enforced by the lifeguards on duty.
  • Ensure that records, accident reports, and all area paperwork and check-off sheets are completed properly and timely by lifeguards on duty.
  • Ensure that the pool area is well maintained by lifeguards on duty. Hazards and unnecessary equipment are removed, lane lines are put in place and removed as appropriate, pool cover is in place, drains are clean, and pool chemicals are at the correct level.
  • Ensure that all personnel records of lifeguards are completed and on file with the Human Resource Manager and keeps certification and in-service records current.
  • Performs all lifeguard responsibilities by covering shifts, acting as site supervisor, monitoring pool activities, applying first aid, performing water rescues as necessary, etc.
  • Coordinate pool cleaning with team leaders and/or junior lifeguards by scheduling the appropriate staff.
  • Review the Aquatic Handbook annually for approval by the Aquatic Manager.
  • Assume responsibility for ensuring optimal performance of lifeguards by hiring, scheduling, coordinating and conducting lifeguard meetings.
  • Ensure that well qualified and capable lifeguards are hired. Check abilities in first aid and water rescue techniques, coordinate interviews and administer water and written tests to determine bets qualified applicants.
  • Orient new lifeguards to job duties and responsibilities by scheduling training sessions and providing employee policy and procedure handbooks.
  • Ensure that lifeguards perform in accordance with established safety regulations and policies by scheduling and coordinating in-service training. Ensure that lifeguards are fully competent in first aid, CPR, and all water rescue techniques while employed by the Service Area.
  • Create weekly lifeguard schedules to ensure adequate coverage by ensuring that all pool areas are maintained during operating hours and schedules coordinate with special pool events and meets.
  • Complete annual evaluation of all lifeguards in a timely manner as required by the Human Resource Manager. As necessary, formulate and implement corrective actions.
  • Assume responsibility for establishing and maintaining positive relations with patrons.
  • Ensure that lifeguards are trained in customer service to assist patrons in a positive and productive manner.
  • Perform customer service responsibilities by responding to questions and concerns promptly.
  • Assume responsibility for establishing and maintaining effective working relations with the Aquatic Manager and all other managers of the Service Area as necessary.
  • Assist the Aquatic Manager in the preparation of the annual budget for lifeguards by preparing schedules of hours and staff needed for the budget year. Continue to assist the Aquatic Manager in monitoring the budget monthly by tracking staff and scheduling.
  • Assist the Aquatic Manager as needed to maintain the efficiency and safety of the aquatics department. Meet with the Aquatic Manager weekly.
  • Keep the Operations Department well informed of pool maintenance needs including cleaning, chemical adjustments, and repairs by proper training of lifeguards.
  • Assist the Aquatic Manager and the Aquatic Program Supervisor with the preparation of all staff meetings and in-service training sessions. Attends all staff meetings and in-service training sessions and conducts as assigned by the Aquatic Manager.
  • Keep the Aquatic Manager well informed of any significant problems or concerns. Provides input for planning of aquatic programs, scheduling, corrective action, etc.
  • Assist the Aquatic Manager and Aquatic Program Supervisor with special events, swim meets, etc.
  • Inventory equipment seasonally, March and September and prepare a list of necessary equipment and supplies and submit to the Aquatic Manager for approval.
  • Assumes responsibility for other duties as assigned by the Aquatic Manger, Assistant Director, Director, or designate.
  • Participate in seminars and classes to improve lifeguarding and supervision skills.
