About The Position

We’re hiring Seasonal Aquatic Instructors for the summer! If you enjoy working with kids, love the water, and want a fun, active job, this is for you. Instructors will lead swim lessons, promote water safety, and help create a positive, welcoming pool environment. GENERAL FUNCTION Works under the direction of the Sr. Director of Aquatics. The Aquatic Instructor will teach swim lessons to program participants while providing a safe, clean, and fun environment. KNOW-HOW General knowledge of swimming and aquatic safety. Training will be provided to increase knowledge in stroke development, diving, and aquatic safety fields. Minimum of 16 years of age. Able to communicate effectively with parents, guardians, and children in writing and in person. Hold and maintain a First Aid/CPR/AED certification from an accredited organization. Training will be provided if needed. YMCA V6, American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor, or equivalent certifications preferred. PRINCIPAL ACTIVITIES Ensure a safe and caring environment for all aquatic program participants. Arrive 10 minutes before your class starts to set up all the equipment as needed for class. Commit to teaching for the entire program season. Prepare for and teach all assigned classes. The use of lesson plans, equipment, and evaluation sheets may be necessary and provided by the Aquatics Director. Educate program participants through the YUSA Swim Lesson program and Safety Around Water program. Instruct one-on-one lessons when assigned. Test, evaluate, and track participant’s progress throughout the lessons. Maintain an open line of communication with program participants, parents/guardians, and supervisors about program participants. Must be suited, on deck, and ready to perform all duties at least 5 minutes prior and during assigned shift. Complete an end of session progress report by the deadline set by supervisor. Follow and enforce safety standards, policies, and procedures provided by the Sr. Director of Aquatics and New Canaan YMCA. Attend staff meetings, training, and other YMCA functions as required by supervisor. Perform other duties as designated by the supervisor. Job Description may be changed at any time by supervisor. PHYSICAL DEMANDS While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to: climb, kneel, reach, push, swim, crouch, stand, pull, grasp, navigate stairs, stoop, crawl, walk, lift, talk, hear, and sit. The employee may occasionally need to exercise these physical labor demands: exert 60-100 pounds of force occasionally and 20-40 pounds of force frequently. Acute hearing is essential to this position. In this position, this person will occasionally be required to work in outside-weather conditions. Aquatic Instructor will: • Adhere to policies related to boundaries with consumers. • Attend required abuse risk management training. • Adhere to procedures related to managing high-risk activities and supervising consumers. • Report suspicious or inappropriate behaviors and policy violations. • Follow mandated abuse reporting requirements. Requirements

  • General knowledge of swimming and aquatic safety.
  • Minimum of 16 years of age.
  • Able to communicate effectively with parents, guardians, and children in writing and in person.
  • Hold and maintain a First Aid/CPR/AED certification from an accredited organization.
  • Strong communication skills
  • First Aid/CPR/AED certification (will provide training and testing if needed)

Nice To Haves

  • YMCA V6, American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor, or equivalent certifications preferred.
  • Experience working with children preferred
