About The Position

The Aquatic Facilities and Programs Coordinator is a part-time leadership position responsible for overseeing all operations of the Wheeling Parks and Recreation Department pools and splash pads. This role manages facility operations, staff supervision, patron safety, and the planning and implementation of aquatic programs and special events. The coordinator reports directly to the Parks and Recreation Director and works collaboratively with other City departments to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality aquatic services.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 21 years of age and possess a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must have a valid driver's license.
  • Current First Aid and CPR/AED certification required
  • Minimum of one (1) year of supervisory experience related to aquatic or recreational operations.
  • Knowledge of pool chemicals, water testing, and pump room operations.
  • Working knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local regulations governing public aquatic facilities.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills with the ability to exercise sound judgment in matters involving staff and patron safety.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Available Memorial Day through Labor Day, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
  • Ability to lift at least 50 pounds.

Nice To Haves

  • American Red Cross Lifeguard and/or Lifeguard Instructor certification preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Parks and Recreation Director with the recruitment, hiring, training, supervision, and evaluation of all aquatics staff, including part-time and seasonal employees.
  • Administer a comprehensive quality control program to ensure staff certifications remain current, policies and procedures are consistently followed, and appropriate staffing levels are maintained.
  • Coordinate and conduct multiple year-round staff trainings.
  • Oversee daily facility operations, including pump room mechanics, water chemistry management, and overall facility cleanliness, in coordination with the Certified Pool Operator from the Public Works Department.
  • Conduct routine visual and physical inspections of pools, splash pads, and related equipment to ensure safety compliance, aesthetic standards, and proper chemical balance.
  • Plan, organize, and implement special events, aquatic programs, swim lessons, and pool party rentals to enhance community engagement and participation.
  • Oversee payroll submission for aquatics staff, maintain inventory controls, and ensure accurate end-of-day financial reconciliation and reporting.
  • Provide recommendations to the Parks and Recreation Director regarding the purchase of maintenance, operational, and first aid supplies, ensuring compliance with City purchasing policies and approved budget allocations.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain long-term facility maintenance plans, emergency action plans, and staff handbooks to promote operational efficiency and safety.
  • Address and resolve patron grievances and disciplinary matters, escalating significant issues to the Parks and Recreation Director as appropriate.
  • Assist in resolving staff performance or disciplinary matters in collaboration with the Parks and Recreation Director.
  • Prepare reports, provide operational updates, and offer strategic recommendations to the Parks and Recreation Director.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned to support departmental operations and community programming.
