We are seeking an Area Safety Manager (ASM) for our Mid-Atlantic area. This role will support the employees and branch locations throughout the Mid- Atlantic. The Area Safety Manager (ASM) will provide strong and visible safety leadership to an assigned area. They are responsible for creating an unparalleled focus that prioritizes the health and safety of ThompsonGas employees, customers, and communities. This is a strategic and hands-on role that is responsible for helping ThompsonGas create a culture of safety, through continuous improvement programs, process creation and implementation, driving a behavioral-based safety focus and ensuring all employees are compliant with industry regulations. The ASM must be forward thinking and have the ability to drive change and create a passion for safety in every employee they interact with. This role will report to the Area Vice President and can be based out of a home office or branch location within the assigned area.

Requirements

  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in Safety role, within a DOT environment
  • Flexibility to travel up to 75%
  • Experience within the propane industryrequired
  • Strong knowledge of propane and distillate systems
  • Knowledgeable and competent in behavioral-based safety programs
  • Expert knowledge of federal, state, and local fleet and safety regulatory requirements (DOT, FMCSA, OSHA, EPA, PHMSA, etc.)
  • Demonstrated results inestablishingstrategic goals and metrics for measuring success
  • Strong Computer application skills including Excel, Word, PowerPoint
  • Knowledge and experience with transportation systems and technology
  • Excellent executive presence with strong leadership, collaboration, analytical, influential, interpersonal, and organizational skills
  • Must be a strategic thinker who is results-oriented with the ability to drive continuous improvement within the Safety organization as well as the overall organization

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in Safetyor related discipline with major coursework in Safety-Transportation Management,Engineeringor related field a plus; field experience will be considered in lieu of degree
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or related safety designation a plus, but notrequired

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct support to the field via a safety training program focused on both industry specific and behavioral based training to drive positive reinforcement and create a culture of safety in support of ThompsonGas’ Mission,Visionand Values
  • Work with safety and operational leaders to establish goals, metrics and priorities for the safety function that will highlight opportunities to reduce and prevent occupational injuries, vehicle incidents and accidents and liability claims; and, work with the employees in assignedareato ensure they understand the goals and metrics and the behaviors necessary to meet them
  • Lead post-accident and incident investigations in their assigned territories including drug and alcohol testing, evaluation of causation, frequency, economic impact and remedial action such as training or retraining
  • Work with the field leadership in yourareato develop vehicle accident and work-related injury prevention plans based on their specific loss data and cause analysis;and,ensure those plans are well executed and focused on day-to day
  • Collaborate with the field leadership in yourareatoidentifydriver safety and regulatory issues, and create a plan to reinforce the correct behavior and create driver performance improvement plans
  • Follow the company’s Quality Review program to inspect facilities and vehicles on a regular basis to ensure compliance with company policies and regulatory requirements and prepare reports including deadlines for remediation
  • Conduct field training including small group and one-on-one sessions
  • Establish direct communication with managers and branch personnel to answer questions and resolve day-to-day technical issues
  • Work witharealeadership toestablishat least one Operations Manager, DistrictManagerand/or Senior Service Technician/Driver to serve, in addition to their assigned operational responsibilities, as the safety leader in their area. These safety leaders will work alongside their respective AreaVice PresidentandASM as an extension of theASM, performing Quality Reviews and conducting training
  • Work witharealeadership toidentifySeniorServiceTechnicians andDrivers who can be developed into trainers, providing on the job training in the field for new personnel and those needingadditionalor refresher training
  • Assist the Vice President of Safety and DOT Compliance Manager with program development and special projects as assigned. These will include such programs as odorant testing, cathodic testing, and a grading system for Quality Reviews and other measures of compliance
  • Perform some level of Quality Review in each branch within their assigned territory at least once annually, using the area safety leaders toassist
  • Review customer installations in each branch each year
  • Follow organization-wide standards for incident reporting
