About The Position

Governor Morehead School (GMS) is the flagship school in North Carolina that serves the special needs of visually impaired students, in a unique residential setting. Apart from its flagship status as the only residential school in the state for visually impaired students, GMS is renowned for its excellent program in Orientation and Mobility as well as its Braille Music program. The Art Teacher reports to the Principal of The Governor Morehead School for the Blind (GMS). The Art Teacher is responsible for providing engaging, developmentally appropriate instruction in the visual arts that cultivates creativity, critical thinking, and artistic expression. The teacher will develop and deliver a standards-aligned art curriculum that supports the academic, social, and emotional growth of students while integrating cross-curricular connections and fostering an appreciation for the visual arts.

Requirements

  • Strong knowledge of visual arts content, instructional strategies, and North Carolina visual arts standards.
  • Ability to inspire, motivate, and engage middle school students in creative expression and learning.
  • Skilled in classroom management and fostering a safe, respectful, and inclusive learning environment.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Proficient in integrating technology into instruction and artistic creation.
  • Ability to assess student learning and use data to inform instruction.
  • Collaborative mindset and willingness to contribute to school culture and team efforts.
  • Understanding of adolescent development and the social-emotional needs of middle school learners.
  • Ability to constantly monitor students' safety and well-being, particularly when participating in an inclusive activity.
  • Friendly and able to interact professionally and positively with staff, students, parents, and community members
  • Ability to multi-task giving priority to the most important duties
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Strong technology skills including use of PowerSchool, Excel, Word, email, text, phone, and other common workplace applications or tools.
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university, preferably in Art Education.
  • Must hold or be eligible for a North Carolina Professional Educator’s License in Art K-12.

Responsibilities

  • Follow all School Board Policies
  • Develop and implement engaging lesson plans that meet the North Carolina art curriculum standards.
  • Create a positive and inclusive classroom environment that encourages artistic exploration, respect, and collaboration.
  • Provide instruction in a range of media, including drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics, digital art, and other visual art forms.
  • Differentiate instruction to meet the diverse learning needs and abilities of students.
  • Assess student progress through formative and summative assessments; maintain accurate records of student performance and attendance.
  • Exhibit and display student artwork throughout the school and at community events or art shows.
  • Manage classroom materials, tools, and art supplies responsibly and maintain an organized, safe, and clean learning environment.
  • Incorporate technology and digital tools to enhance student learning and creativity where appropriate.
  • Collaborate with other teachers and staff to integrate art into interdisciplinary projects and school-wide initiatives.
  • Communicate effectively and regularly with students, parents, and school staff regarding student progress, classroom activities, and upcoming projects.
  • Participate in faculty meetings, professional development, and school-based committees as required.
  • Adhere to district policies, procedures, and the North Carolina Code of Ethics for Educators.
  • Support and uphold the mission, vision, and values of Camden County Schools.
  • Other duties as assigned by the administration.
