About The Position

St. Mary's University School of Law invites applications for multiple full-time Assistant, Associate, or Full Professors of Practice to teach in St. Mary's Legal Research and Writing Program. All positions are nine-month, full-time, non-tenure track positions. At a minimum, Professors of Practice will be hired for a term of two or more years with the opportunity for promotion and renewal for good performance at the end of the initial contract term. Salary for a nine-month contract will range from $80,000 to $105,000, commensurate with experience and dependent on rank. Opportunities may be available for additionally compensated teaching or writing. While scholarship is not a requirement of the position, research grants may be available. Successful Legal Research and Writing Professors of Practice are team-oriented and collaborative, committed to excellence in teaching, and demonstrate passionate dedication to their students. Successful candidates will be joining a dynamic, diverse, and collegial team of faculty actively engaged in redeveloping the Law School's Legal Research and Writing Program to position both the Program and its students for national success. These positions are student-facing and require a campus presence, except when teaching online classes. The School of Law's Legal Research and Writing Program combines the skills of traditional legal research and writing with oral advocacy. The program includes two 3-credit, graded courses in the first year, a Legal Writing Center, and upper-level writing instruction. The sections for the first-year courses in this program are kept small and average between 13-18 students. A full teaching load for a full-time Legal Research and Writing Professor of Practice consists of two small sections of first-year Legal Research and Writing per semester, totaling approximately 28-36 students per semester. Professors of Practice will, among other things, participate on committees, attend faculty meetings, teach classes, regularly meet with individual students, and provide extensive feedback on written work. Professors of Practice also assist with academic workshops, orientation planning and execution, and course planning and materials for the future academic year. The School of Law has a full-time day and online part-time evening program, and select Professors of Practice will teach in the online program based on the needs of the office and the law school.
