About The Position
The North Carolina Department of Justice, led by the Attorney General of North Carolina, represents the state, state agencies, and elected officials, and defends the rights of the people of North Carolina. The Department handles all state criminal appeals cases and assists district attorneys with complex criminal cases at their request. Additionally, the Department of Justice includes the North Carolina State Crime Lab, the North Carolina Justice Academy, and the Sheriffs’ and Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Divisions. Recruitment Range: Up to $103,184 IMPORTANT NOTE: This posting closes at 11:59:59 PM the night BEFORE the End Date listed. The Commission, Coastal and Administrative Section is responsible for representing various commissions and boards, such as the Environmental Management Commission, the Coastal Resources Commission, and the Marine Fisheries Commission. The section also represents the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) and its divisions and units in cases arising under the Coastal Area Management Act (and related acts), the transfer of surface water between river basin, and in personnel matters. It also handles the collection of civil penalties assessed by DEQ and administers the Attorney General’s Environmental Enhancement Grant program. This position is responsible for representing all aspects of administrative and civil litigation, legal advice in non-litigation matters, and legal advice to the citizen commissions at regular meetings. The position also prepares and argues criminal appellate cases, responds to inquiries and requests for legal assistance from the General Assembly, the Governor, and other public officials, and responds to public inquiries. The position provides essential services to DEQ and the Attorney General’s Office related to matters in litigation, and non-litigation matters, including serving as the lead attorney responsible for advising DEQ regarding personnel matters. Some travel, including some occasional overnight stays are required
Requirements
- Licensed to practice law by the North Carolina State Bar and three years of progressively responsible professional legal experience.
