About The Position

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening the community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. The Assistant Camp Director, under the supervision of the Camp Director, provides safe, motivational, and knowledgeable leadership to the camp staff and campers. The Assistant Director is responsible for assisting the Camp Director in additional duties assigned, including the supervision of program staff and supporting the staff with behavior management techniques. The Assistant Camp Director will help champion a culture of service excellence and support and advocate the mission and values of the YMCA.

Requirements

  • BA / BS degree in education, sociology, psychology, physical education, recreation, human services or related field (preferred).
  • Minimum of one-year experience working with youth, teens, and adults in a recreation setting.
  • Program planning and development experience.
  • Must have good human relations’ skills to facilitate positive relationships with community agencies, staff, volunteers, parents, members and program participants.
  • Knowledge of the YMCA Movement and trends in the “field”.
  • Current CPR and First Aid certification within 90 days of employment
  • Completion of Child Abuse Prevention training within 14 days of employment
  • This position requires work on nights and weekends
  • There may be periods during the year where the work week exceeds 40 hours
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs.
  • Position requires the ability to walk/run around the camp property.
  • Able to stand/move without sitting for four to five hours at a time.
  • Able to handle all emergencies that may arise.

Responsibilities

  • Recruits, hires, trains, develops, schedules and directs personnel and volunteers as needed. Reviews and evaluates staff performance. Develops strategies to motivate staff and achieve goals.
  • Provides support to Camp Director in hiring, training staff, managing facilities, marketing camp, and behavior management of campers. Possess mature judgement and sound decision making.
  • Monitor daily camp operations to adhere to all state, ACA, and YMCA regulations. Possess a broad knowledge of camp activities, goals and objectives, risk management, programming planning and implementation techniques that help to create a fun, safe, and educational environment.
  • Provides support to camp staff with behavioral situations during the camp day Ability to observe camper behavior and apply appropriate behavior management techniques.
  • Assures compliance with state and local regulations. Ensures that program standards are met and safety procedures are followed.
  • Facilitates communication and provides leadership. Models relationship-building skills in all interactions. Maintains strong relationships and an open communication line with Camp Director and Camp staff teams.
  • Relate to people in a positive but firm manner while motivating and guiding campers and staff to succeed in camp program.
  • React calmly and quickly in emergency situations in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.
  • Assists in YMCA fund raising activities and special events. Additional duties assigned Camp Director.
  • Assist Camp Director in various areas of pre-camp planning and staff training. Attend Family Nights. Lead the entire camp in songs, games, and activities.
  • Development and delivery of quality programming that is consistent with the goals and objectives of Camp Otter and meets the needs and expectations of the camper families enrolled.
  • Expansion of existing programs through building on traditional camp activities, while developing new program ideas relevant to that week’s theme.
  • Development of quality staff and volunteers who are fully engaged in the camp and provide a safe and rich experience for all program participants.
