About The Position

The Assistant Director for Family Engagement develops and manages initiatives, programs, events, and communication strategies that strengthen relationships between Miami University and families of Miami students. This position ensures that families are informed, supported, and engaged partners in their students’ success. The Assistant Director for Family Engagement reports to the Director of Student Transitions and Family Engagement within the Division of Student Life.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree, completed by the position start date.
  • 1 year of full-time professional experience in an education or leadership-related field; experience may be cumulative (e.g. 2 years of half-time graduate assistantship work)
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities, set timelines, and ensure deadlines are met.

  • Master’s degree in student development higher/adult education, student personnel, student affairs or related field, completed by the position start date.
  • Demonstrated ability to field complaints, concerns, and refer to appropriate resources.
  • Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with a wide range of stakeholders, including family members, students, faculty, staff, and external partners.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to write clear and timely messages in response to email messages and other inquiries.
  • Ability to work in partnership across the university and make appropriate and individualized referrals and connections.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the initial point of contact for Miami parents and family members through phone, email, and social media communications.
  • Assist with orientation programs (summer, August, January) for more than 4,000 first-year students, 300 transfer students, and more than 5,000 family members with a specific focus on the family orientation experience.
  • Seek innovative and creative programming strategies (both active and passive) to engage family members in the Miami community, including during student and family transitions to the college environment.
  • Foster partnerships with campus entities to support family members.
  • Support the creation and maintenance of print, electronic, and social media communications including email, newsletters (CampusESP), family calendar, social media, promotional materials, video/webinar series, and printed resources for family members of Miami students.
  • Coordinate referrals to manage and address questions and concerns from family members.
  • Teach section(s) of the one-credit University 101 courses for new first-year and/or transfer students to support student transition and engagement.
