About The Position

The University of Maryland School of Music seeks a dynamic, creative, collaborative, and dedicated conductor-educator to serve as Assistant Director of Bands. Qualified candidates should have: A genuine enjoyment & appreciation for athletic bands and working with non-music majors Strong musicianship Multiple successful years experience of teaching marching band Experience working with collegiate athletic bands Strong communication, planning, & organizing skills Experience writing drill and music arrangements for athletic bands Administrative & organizational experience - including coordinating logistics of ensemble travel Knowledge of current trends in pedagogy and repertoire programming for instrumental ensembles

Requirements

  • Master of Music degree in wind conducting or a closely related field at the time of application
  • Three years of successful teaching experience at the university, community college, and/or high school level with a significant marching band component
  • Curriculum Vitae and cover letter
  • 10-15 minute video of concert ensemble rehearsal (camera facing conductor)
  • Video of marching band halftime performance featuring drill written by the candidate
  • List of 4-6 professional references and their contact information
  • PDF score & recording of an athletic band-style arrangement created by candidate

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the teaching and administration of the UMD Athletic Band program that includes 5 total instructional staff - 4 graduate assistants and 1 program coordinator
  • Co-teach the “Mighty Sound of Maryland” Marching Band
  • Lead the instruction and administration of the Maryland Pep Band (fall and spring semesters)
  • Conduct the University Band (fall and spring semesters)
  • Teach the Marching Band Pedagogy
  • Recruit students to the athletic band program
  • Undertake additional possible assignments based on the successful candidate’s secondary skills and program needs
  • Service to the department as assigned
