About The Position

The Assistant Director’s primary functions are to support student organization programming on campus and to be part of the coordination of New Student and Family Orientation, as well as additional new student transition programs including Wildcat Welcome Week. Furthermore, as a co-advisor to the Union Board, the largest campus-wide programming organization on campus, the Assistant Director is responsible for working closely with students and college staff to support student-organized evening and weekend programs, as well as large-scale annual events. The Assistant Director assists students in developing events that contribute to the social, cultural, and educational enrichment of the Davidson College community and provides leadership training and guidance to student leaders.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in Higher Education Administration, College Student Development, or similar field required
  • 1-3 years of relevant professional experience in student programming/leadership development and/or new student orientation preferred.
  • Successful candidates must possess an appreciation for the liberal arts, the ability to work independently, and excellent communication skills.
  • Candidates should also be detail-oriented, problem solvers, and creative.

Nice To Haves

  • Two years of graduate school experience will be considered equivalent to one year of professional experience.
  • A comprehensive understanding of student development theory and knowledge of best practices for the administration of student activities and new student and family programs is highly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Co-advise the Union Board, campus-wide programming organization with an annual budget of over $450,000 that produces over 150 events per school year. Meet with half of the board members for weekly one-on-one advising sessions. Provide leadership training for Union Board officers and members. Negotiate contracts for performers, speakers, and vendors for committee events. Provide weekend support for Union Board events on a rotating basis and support major programming board weekends, including Fall Fling, Campus Holiday Party, Winterfest, and Spring Frolics.
  • Hire, Train, and Supervise four student workers in the Student Activities Office
  • Recruit, hire, train, and be the point person for the Orientation Team Mentors and Orientation Team Leaders.
  • Plan and execute New Student and Family Orientation alongside the Student Activities Office staff.
  • Hire and supervise a student editor for the Wildcat Handbook, an annual publication distributed to all incoming students featuring a class directory and information about Davidson from the student perspective.
  • Coordinate Wildcat Welcome Week.
  • Coordinate the First 45 Days Program for new students.
  • Plan the Senior Class Party with the Student Government Association’s Senior Class Officers.
  • Serve as a resource to all student organizations interested in planning events on campus. Assist students in event support, including writing contracts, securing film rights, and helping with WildcatSync- Davidson’s event management platform.
  • Assist in the creation of and lead the trainings for student organizations.
  • Assist in planning and implementation of Wildcat Weekend events.
