About The Position

The University of Nevada, Reno is seeking applications for an Assistant Director, Upward Bound Programs. Reporting to the Director, this position provides leadership for the planning, coordination, implementation, and evaluation of four federally funded Upward Bound and Upward Bound Math and Science programs. The Assistant Director ensures program activities during the academic year and summer are implemented in compliance with federal regulations (34 CFR 645), institutional policies, and approved grant objectives. The Assistant Director oversees instructional services, academic support programming, and summer initiatives, including the Summer Academy, and supervises professional and student staff such as program coordinators, academic support personnel, and summer teams. The role also ensures the accuracy of participant eligibility documentation, student records, and program performance data, and supports annual reporting and program assessment. Working closely with the Director, the Assistant Director contributes to strategic planning, grant development and renewal efforts, and partnerships with schools, families, university departments, and community organizations. This position requires strong leadership, organizational skills, and the ability to support educational opportunities for first-generation and low-income students.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree and four (4) years of related professional work experience OR Master’s Degree and two (2) years of related professional work experience
  • Related experience: Experience managing student-focused academic programs; supervising staff; overseeing data and reporting processes; interpreting policies; and supporting high school or college access initiatives or related experience.
  • Requires a flexible work schedule, including significant evening and weekend commitments throughout the academic year.
  • Requires extensive summer availability, including a residential component during the summer.
  • Requires overnight and multi-day travel with students for college tours, training, and program-related activities.
  • Periodic travel to target schools and program sites, including locations in the Fernley and Silver Stage areas, is required.
  • Occasional regional or national travel for professional development, conferences, and grant-related meetings may be required.
