About The Position

The Assistant Director assists the Funeral Director with planning, directing and coordinating funerals while following the program guidelines for Tribal and community member families. This position will help families access the resources available through Tribal programs that assist with funeral related expenses for tribal and community members. This position requires availability on nights, weekends and holidays.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED; and six years of tribal services experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience and knowledge using word processing and spreadsheets (i.e. Word for Windows, Excel, Access, etc.).
  • Requires the ability to remain calm during stressful situations and show empathy when dealing with grief.
  • Must have knowledge of Tribal ceremonial practices or a willingness to learn.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license and proof of insurance.
  • Must have excellent organizational skills.
  • Ability to work well under pressure.
  • Ability to be flexible and pursue different directions on short notice.
  • Must have very adaptable schedule and ability to travel as needed.
  • May need to work evenings, weekends, holidays, etc. to assist families in crisis.
  • Requires the ability to operate a computer, scanner multi-line telephone, facsimile and photocopier.
  • Requires the ability to read, write, communicate, and interpret information accurately in English.
  • Requires the ability to concentrate and consistently produce accurate work.

Nice To Haves

  • Photo & slideshow program experience is helpful to make funeral card & photo slideshows.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as one of the main contact people in the absence of the Director for tribal member families seeking funeral assistance through Tribal programs.
  • Supports Coordinators in planning of services, supporting families and day of arrangements. Acts as a backup whenever required.
  • Works with the Director to review and edit department policies as needed.
  • Assists Director with tabulating and posting data in recording files; entering information into statistical reports
  • Meet and coordinate with the cemetery director for the purchase of caskets, deliveries and burial needs at the Tribe’s cemetery.
  • Transport deceased person to and from an outside funeral home or out of Pierce County, State and at times from Canada
  • Approves and enters timesheets in Dayforce and approve stipends for cooks in the absence of the director
  • Approves payments of funeral assistance checks in Microix in the absence of the director
  • Assists the director in preparation, planning, and monitoring the funeral department budget on a monthly basis
  • Provide leadership, make decisions, organize, prioritize and delegate tasks.
  • Ensures departments are implementing teamwork strategies to meet organizational and departmental goals.
  • Participates in the development of the Puyallup Tribe of Indians vision, mission, and strategic direction
  • Assists the director with departmental goals and objectives for the Annual Operations plan.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
